Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Heffington issued an open letter to West Point graduates earlier this week blasting the superintendent, commandant, and dean of the military academy for contributing to a “culture of permissiveness.”
The letter was subsequently posted on the website of American Military News.
Heffington told The Daily Caller he wrote the letter to the USMA Class of 1963 when several of its graduates contacted him asking how Spenser Rapone, a cadet espousing radically anti-American views, was allowed to graduate.
“The Superintendent refuses to enforce admissions standards or the cadet Honor Code, the Dean refuses to enforce academic standards, and the Commandant refuses to enforce standards of conduct and discipline,” the letter charges. “The end result is a sort of malaise that pervades the entire institution.”
Heffington’s eye-opening letter describes systemic problems at West Point that he says have led to a decline in honor, standards and meritocracy. The end result of said neglect, according to the lieutenant colonel, is a current “embrace of mediocrity.”
“Every fall, the Superintendent addresses the staff and faculty and lies,” he asserts. “He repeatedly states that ‘We are going to have winning sports teams without compromising our standards,’ and everyone in Robinson Auditorium knows he is lying because we routinely admit athletes with ACT scores in the mid-teens across the board.”
Heffington states that he has personally taught cadets who are “borderline illiterate.” In another section, Heffington laments what he refers to as West Point’s “nonexistent” academic standards, and takes aim at the dean:

I grew up not far from the Academy and spent alot of time there in my youth. After I enlisted, I spent at year there with MEDDAC and also was Cadre during Beast Barracks while with the 10th Mountain. This is disappointing to say the least. I have friends who are on the faculty there, and the one thing that they have told me, is that the number of civilian Professors and staff increased, especially when Operational tempo in Iraq and Afghanistan was high. Many Officers left those teaching positions to get their “combat command” ticket punched.
As far as the Athletic recruiting goes, it was hard for Army to recruit against the other service academies while at war. Unless a Midshipman “goes Marine” or becomes a SEAL or SWCC or Aviator, it was easy for Navy to go into a player’s home and tell Momma, “we can keep your boy safe and aboard ship.” I know at least two Lacrosse players personally that were committed to USMA but enrolled at USNA, after that speech. Not saying there was no danger to Naval personnel during these conflicts, but it was obvious to the parents what the percentages were.
I've personally noticed increasingly progressive views on international politics, global security and social issues amongst WP officers who graduated even as early as the late '90s/2000s, so I suspect it started then but accelerated to full out PC liberalism under Obama.

I have an officer son serving now in SF. He says they could reduce officer corps by 30% by cutting unnecessary staff. He also said that SF Capt are leaving because of bad leadership not tempo of ops. Too many unnecessary staff missions in too many places. PC crap.

As a USNA graduate, I regret what is occurring at all the Service academies, which is a lowering of standards and expectations to increase minority and female graduation rates. The worst of it comes with recruiting (largely) minority football players, including blacks, ethnic Samoans, and others. What I will disagree with is the idea the USNA recruits are promised safety. A majority of the minorities, particularly blacks, want to go Marines. A lot of that is because they don’t want to be on the water for a career — many come to the academy as non-swimmers, and although they have to learn to do so, they hate the experience. I know because I was a PT instructor my last year, and helped to run the Sub Squads for the PT tests: running, applied strength, obstacle course, swimming. My class had four blacks in our company, beginning Plebe Summer (pre-women era). Two dropped out before the end of Plebe Summer and two made it all the way to graduation. Both graduates went Marines.
Lee, Grant, Davis, Sherman, Patton, MacArthur, Eisenhower and Pershing are turning in their graves.
