The Virginia gubernatorial race concludes in just under four weeks. Democratic candidate and Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam has a lead of 6.8 percent over Republican Ed Gillespie in the RealClearPolitics polling averages. The last time Gillespie led in a public poll was in March.
So whats up with all the panic and worry and premonitions of disaster for Democrats in Virginia, given all the positive objective indicators of the state of the race?
Democrats may be suffering from their own version of PTSD Post-Trump Stress Disorder in which pessimism operates as a natural defense mechanism to prevent the kind of shocked disappointment they experienced on the night of November 8, 2016.
Hopes of a quick recovery from the Trump madness were temporarily raised by Jon Ossoffs special-election campaign in Georgia, which at one point looked like a certain win, but then that, too, turned out to be another bitter buzzkill.
So perhaps all the bad vibes Democrats are feeling about Virginia have less to do with the race itself than with the daily reality of waking up each morning and realizing that Donald Trump is president of the United States and apparently none of us will deserve good things for the foreseeable future.
Democrats who think that enthusiasm and self-confidence are tangible assets in politics should fervently hope that Gillespie doesnt pull an upset on November 7. It might be enough to raise Post-Trump Stress Disorder to epidemic levels.

That is a virtual tie in polling.
Was VIRGINIA one of the states that cleaned up its voter list?
Oh PLEASE, Lord God, let Ed win this Gubernatorial election! PLEASE?!?
I want to see Liberal “conniption fits” and LITERAL “head explosions” actually looks like!
Virginia use to be one off favorite states to visit.
Wonder if some of the good folks from ‘Ol Virginia jump in here. I realize Gillespie is not your first choice, nor mine either, but does he have a chance?
It wouldn’t have anything to do with the debate and how each handled the MS-13 issue? Gillespie took the democrat to the woodshed.
The dems proved they can’t govern. Now it’s time for the clean-up crew to move in.
Heh, heh.... :)
Hope for the best, but it is VA, which is overrun by non-Virginia-born leftists.
isn’t Gillespie a swamp creature?
I just said a prayer for his win.
I think God may have to intervene to stop the voter fraud in its many forms.
He did it in November with PDJT. He can easily do it again!
In the Kentucky race, Bevin was down in the polls on election day by about five points. I believe he won by almost ten.
We used to live in Northern VA (Arlington and then Loudoun County).
I still remember one of the Democrat commentators on Fox News who used to work in the Fairfax County election office bragging how Fairfax always waits for the rest of the state’s voting numbers to come in and then finding just enough Democratic votes to win the race. I can see the guy’s face but cannot for the life of me remember his name.
I was just up in Virginia. I saw some Northam signs across from the IBEW hq in Front Royal. Also saw a Northam ad on TV that was all on abortion, usually not a first line tactic in statewide races as it repels some voters who might otherwise consider the candidate. I also saw some Gillespie signs. Overall, low key, and I expect low turnout based on my non-expert just visiting opinion.
I believe the commentator was Bob Beckel; he appeared to be talking from personal experience. Unbelievable that the garbage out of Chicago has taken over voting in Fairfax County, which used to be a real swing county.
Virgina has some of the worst polling. Crooked, McAuful and especially that toad Warner nearly lost it after an extremely comfortable polling lead. If Gillespie is close, ~3-4 points by election day, he probably wins.
I’ll say Amen under my breath. But my read on Ed Gillespie is that he’s a Bush Rino, and semi-anti-Trump, at best. Also, he is so bland, he makes warmed-over cream of wheat look desirable. If he were pro-Trump the margin would be in his favor. Not real swift!
Staying home. I will not vote for a GOPe Bushie RINO. He will have to win without me.
He has a chance, but unfortunately it seems that 3 of the most populated counties, Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun, keep Republicans from winning.
