Less than two months after the country's largest soda tax went into effect, embattled lawmakers in Cook County are already poised to repeal it.
The tax has been plagued, in its very short life, by legal challenges, implementation glitches and a screeching, multimillion-dollar media battle between the soda industry and public health groups. On Tuesday, in recognition of growing public pressure, Cook County's Board of Commissioners is expected to vote to roll back the tax, effective as soon as Dec. 1.
Several Cook County commissioners who switched their votes in favor of repeal have cited outrage.
"I listened to the community, the residents I represent, and there's been a strong outcry," Commissioner John Daley told the Chicago Tribune. "It's a lot of taxes they've been hit with. It's every economic group

I was suprized to see the American Heart Association was a big supporter of this tax. They carried signs into the appeal hearing yesterday.
It means the only way you’re getting my 64 ounce soda is out of my cold dead hands.
I will go to hell the way I want.
Not that I think drinking soda will end me to hell :)
It’s just a way of saying don’t tell me how to live my life govt.
Gov always mucks up whatever it does. It should stick to minting currency and keeping terrorists and criminals out of this country.
This is great news as it shows the liberal solution to everything. If the conservative doesn’t believe in large drinks, they don’t buy them. The liberal wants to outlaw them. If the conservative doesn’t like a TV program, they change the channel. The liberal wants to ban the program. If a poor person wants more of the economic pie, the conservative grows the size of the pie—a rising tide lifts all boats. The liberal wants to take the pie from those who earned it and give it to those who haven’t.
And to those Hollywood BS types who say taxes aren’t high enough, until I see you take out your checkbook and write a multi-million dollar check to the IRS, sit down and STFU. The rest of us who pay for your Liberal largess are struggling out here. Free cell phones for deadbeats. Really? That’s the best you got in Washington?
Cook County = City of Chicago. Weasels trying to put lipstick on a pig.
Reading between the lines says tax revenue on soda fell...
Opps...
My Cardiologist, who just recently retired after a 50 year career on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, once told be that he read in one of his professional journals that a huge percentage of the typical American's daily calorie intake was due to sodas and soft drinks.IIRC he said it was 40%...but it was some time ago so I could be wrong.
However,a special tax is a stupid idea if if what he read is accurate.Self control is the key...not laws.
I quit drinking this stuff almost six years ago. I feel it was the correct decision for my health. But I really resent a Nanny Government that would tell me I HAD to do it.
DemoRat pols knew full well the outcome of this soda tax based on history of it tried elsewhere but facts be damned when it comes to them. They push the envelope beyond wisdom and reason because they can and results be damned until it bites them in the butt. They never learn morons.
