LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock police confirm that a Texas Tech police officer has been shot and killed at Texas Tech Police Headquarters.

It happened around 7:45 p.m. on Monday night at the Texas Tech Police building at 413 Flint Avenue. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old freshman Hollis A. Daniels, was taken into custody at 9:28 p.m. according to officials with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office. He was located near Jones AT&T Stadium.

Officials with Texas Tech University say since the Daniels was taken into custody, the lockdowns at Texas Tech University and University Medical Center have been lifted. Officials say people need to avoid the Texas Tech Police Department and the north side of campus.

Texas Tech officials tell us they did a welfare check on a student, found drugs and drug paraphernalia in his room and brought him in, once at the PD building, the student pulled a gun and shot the officer in the head, killing him. Then the student fled on foot.

Yes that does make much more sense. He had been arrested at Tech last year on drug charges so was known to them already. I can’t imagine he wasn’t patted down although that’s how the news stories read. Maybe they were just poorly written and that’s actually what happened ( he got one of their guns). Still — why wasn’t he handcuffed ?

He had been arrested at Tech last year on drug charges so was known to them already. He should have been dismissed from the university for the first arrest. Instead of focusing on gun control. . .how about drug control.
