Gunman's brother: 'If a lot of these hotels say they don’t know Steve, they’re lying'
LA Times ^ | 10/4/2017 | Laura J. Nelson and Matt Pearce

Posted on 10/05/2017 6:22:13 PM PDT by Zhang Fei

"We’re wealthy people," Eric Paddock said. "$100,000 isn’t that much money.... He gambled that much through a machine in hours.... He’s got the highest level of membership card at a lot of these [casino] hotels. If a lot of these hotels say they don’t know Steve, they’re lying."

(snip)

Paddock remembered his brother as a man who used his money to take care of his family financially. "He helped make me and my family wealthy. I mean, he’s the reason I was able to retire three years ago when I got really burned out doing the job I did," Eric Paddock said.

(snip)

"He didn’t have a lot of friends," Paddock continued. "He was a private person. There’s a story about that he’s, ‘ohhhh, he kept his shades closed, and he didn’t talk to me for the first three times he saw me walking in the neighborhood.’ Wow. That makes him really weird, doesn’t it? He was a private guy. That’s why you can’t find out anything about him, that’s why there’s no pictures. Is he such a weirdo because he didn’t have a Facebook page and posted 50,000 damn pictures of himself every day? Who’s weird?"

(snip)

But, of his brother's attack, Paddock said: "This is 100% Steve, did this by himself. People can’t seem to cope with that either. But Steve is a — was a — highly intelligent, highly successful person. He could have done anything he wanted to do. And he did. He made himself wealthy. He made us wealthy. He was a very successful person. He gambled for 20-plus years, successfully. It’s like a job to him. He did it mathematically."

I say:

1) He knew Steve’s political views
2) Of course he knew about the purchases but
3) In light of (1) he probably knew something was coming ... soon
4) But Steve provided cash from whatever his source was (maybe he hit the lottery?) so he didn’t want to turn in the Golden Goose brother.

and somewhat to go down the old tinfoil road

5) He knew of brother Steve’s admiration of Antifa and/or ISIS. This one I’ll hold in the tinfoil category for now.

I suspect if old Steve would have been an extreme white nationalist that would have been our 2 seconds after the terrorist attack. Which makes me think he was left-aligned. Of course, I’ll also have to admit that’s tinfoil. At this point.

If the evil one hadn’t been consistently losing money, the hotels wouldn’t have been consistently giving him great comps.

I'm not sure that's the way it works. They're looking for people who gamble large sums consistently, because the math should eventually favor the house in the long run. Losing small sums consistently to individuals doesn't really harm the casino, because it's great marketing having a guy talk about winning to rubes who aren't necessarily as skilled.

Gambling for that long is a way to launder money. You play for a long time losing a very small amount of money. At the end of the night you get a fresh set of bills in cash. Or you get it in an account and you can take it out of the ATM. Or someone else can. There is no path from accountant to real estate flipper to multi-millionaire to excessive gambler. He must have been a cheat somewhere along the way.

I think with a father who was a bank robber, the accountant figured out a scheme. He needed to launder the money and explain his wealth, so he gambled in the game that had the lowest lose percentage. So he lost 3%. But he laundered 97%.

I have a few guesses as to what was going on:

His father had a lot of money somewhere and he was laundering it before he used it.
He figured out how to rob a company that he worked for. and used the gambling to hide the income.
He was part of the mob or other criminal group. He would pay people out through his gambling accounts.
He was being paid to buy and sell guns. He would get cash. Gamble it and take it on account. Then he could write a check off his casino account.
He flew money into the country, (or out) and he needed to get it in the credit system.

An extremely private accountant, who gambled constantly for 20 years, with a pilots license and a gun license. This guy has too man ways to cheat the system.

I think the brother knows a lot more than he’s telling us and the diarrhea of the mouth routine is his tactic to distract, deescalate, and ultimately convince people that he really knows nothing more than the rest of us about why his brother did this.

I think if Steve was a white nationalist he would not have shot up a country music concert. He’s a hard lefty that MAY have Islamo ties as well.

My instincts tell me he was laundering dirty money. The family cover stories do not make sense to me.

If he didn’t win a Powerball or something like that, laundering big time drug money would certainly fit.

And get all the hotel, food, trips, etc. comps as a bonus.

very interesting if any of it is true. These days it is very hard to separate the wheat from the chaff...sometimes a psycho killer is just that, other times maybe not. Hey that could be quotable!

But he helped him retire three years ago. Didn’t talk to him though.

His brain needs to be preserved and examined to diagnose the disorder that led to this, and hopefully treat it in future patients.

I suppose that they could scrape it off the wall of the hotel room and sponge it out of the carpet.

since brother dearest admits that good old Steve financed them, then all that money should be up for grabs for all of good ol Steve’s victims.....

This would be a really great time for little brother to shut up about what a wonderful successful guy his mass murdering brother was.

That’s how he laundered it, but where did it come from?

These statements are consistent, because two different people made them. You're obviously a busy guy, but it would have taken you less time to check this out than to type this comment.
