The powerful National Rifle Association on Thursday backed "additional regulations" on devices that boost semi-automatic weapons' firing rates, like the tools used by the shooter in the Las Vegas massacre.
In a statement, the influential gun rights group's Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox urged the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to review the legality of so-called bump stocks. They stopped short of pushing Congress to pass a bill banning or regulating the devices.
Still, the NRA's support for more regulation of bump stocks could give Republican lawmakers more breathing room to pass a bill regulating them.
The statement came as bipartisan momentum for regulating the devices built on Capitol Hill.
Asked about the growing momentum for a ban on bump stocks, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president is "open to having that conversation," but stressed that Trump is "a strong supporter of the Second Amendment," and that any discussion of gun laws is premature.

He will sign off because he knows it won’t do a damn thing to stop a determined killer.
This will lead to “firing rate” restrictions for all firearms.
You are wrong. There is no 'placating' people who won't be satisfied until all guns are banned.
Give not an inch of ground.
Make fun of them.
Propose banning rubber bands instead, since you can use them to 'roll your own.
I personally, have no use for these contraptions because I like having more control over the ultimate destination of my rounds, but I do not care. Bans on hardware like this is stupid and completely useless.
Good lord - do you ever see the leftists say we can have talks about banning certain types of abortion? HELL NO. They double down and demand jillingnof newborns counts as abortion.
Do you ever see leftists say we can have talks about restricting illegal immigration? HELL NO. They’ll tear this country apart before they even admit that.
But MY side is all too happy to capitulate and deprive me of more rights rather than fight like the leftists do.
THIS STOPS NOW.
We should not only not ban bump stocks we should remove ALL restriction to them as a requirement under the ADA which bump stocks are primarily used for!
A poor and very incomplete list but point is that we likely won't see either "extreme" but will get something in-between. Getting national CCW in trade for ban on all automatic weapons, conversions, and parts is a no brainer win. Somewhere there is a report that only 175K are in private, legal ownership anyway. These bumpstocks or other DIY alternatives, like rubberbands, are great novelty but likely more unsafe than helpful.
Rubber bands are next.
I find it hard to believe that you could ever have very good control of the weapon with a bump stock on it, to hell with aiming and hitting the target.
Furthermore, the recordings I heard sounded pretty uniform in their shot speed, no variation in the speed of bullets being fired. I highly doubt that could be replicated with a bump stock gun and would love to see it for 10 minutes..
Agreed, And the ‘Rubber Band Trick’ has been around for a long, long time.
My ten year old can empty a 25-round Ruger 10/22 magazine in less than 20 seconds, quite accurately to my surprise, and swap magazines (not so fast at the moment), and repeat. Easily sustain 50-75 rounds a minute, consistently hitting his target at 25 yards; slow down a bit and same at 50 and even 100. Practice and he’d be and will get better. Bet he could get to 200+ per minute if I let him practice and focus on that goal, which I won’t. BTW, there are videos out there of professional shooters firing 20-30 rounds in seconds with semi-automatic pistols, hitting their targets every time. Practice and experience lead to speed and accuracy. So, what is the measure for “firing rate” that would be meaningful? Is there a threshold that a mere finger can reach? Ban any gun or device that can or enables exceeding that? I’m suggesting a serious discussion here, not simply dismissing any limit to avoid discussion. Your thoughts?
Yes, ban rubber bands. Besides, cats can choke on them so they are demonstrateably dangerous.
“Bans on hardware like this is stupid and completely useless.”
That’s my point.
Who could possibly care?
Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox urged the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to review the legality of so-called bump stocks. They stopped short of pushing Congress to pass a bill banning or regulating the devices.Versus the headline.
Political cover for Congress.
Politically pragmatic. It won't have the slightest effect on anything, but it allows congress to pretend they are doing something. The NRA is throwing them a bone in the hopes they can cash in this favor at some time in the future.
Right now every screeching Liberal in Media (which means everybody in media) is demanding congress take some action. Doing this will have no real effect, other than allowing congress to claim it "did something."
I do as well. I never even heard of a bump stock before this week. I did know that converting semi auto to full is a felony so I assumed these things would be illegal. I guess when ATF issued the regs they screwed this one up to.
Anyway for those criticizing the NRA, we pick the hill we want to die on and this is not a fight the average gun owner thinks is prudent.
It’s still a win to gun control leftists who will use it to say “see? We can have reasonable gun control legislation” then they’ll move to the next target like clip sizes or limits on ammo sales or more regulations on gun manufacturers.
It’s a slippery slope. They WANT you to give them this gimme.
But you never see them give US a gimme.
Don't forget rubber bands. If you use a rubber band to pull the trigger forward it's much easier to bump fire than without it.
The more you know about the relationships between the NRA, the Congress, the Media and the Public, the funnier this is.
The NRA knows that a "bump stock" is just a spring with a handle. The NRA knows that anyone could make one with very little effort.
This is a throwaway bone for Congress to pretend they are doing something about the Las Vegas shooter, but passing such a law will have absolutely no effect on the next Las Vegas Shooter.
The NRA has been behind every major gun control legislation in the past 100 years.
No loss to us who value the 2nd. And it placates the stupid.
Exactly, and your description of it is brief and accurate. (soul of wit.)
