A new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that infotainment centers included in the dashboards of our cars are causing more distracted driving.
The AAA study found that the technology built into the car including voice or touch screen navigation can distract drivers from the road for more than 40 seconds.
Out of the 30 new 2017 models that were tested, 2/3 of them had built-in technology systems that were rated as "highly" distracting.
Here in Connecticut, AAA found men admitted to being distracted far more often than women, and men tend to use technology more often for directions than women.
And you may not even realize how distracted you are, even if you feel you're a safe driver.
When driving at 25 miles per hour, you can travel the length of four football fields during the time it could take to enter a destination into the navigation system.
Out of the 30 cars tested, none of them received an acceptable score, meaning, all of the systems demanded the driver's attention away from the road for an extensive amount of time.
The tested cars and their demand levels on drivers attention are as follows. are as follows:
Audi Q7 QPP Very High Demand Cadillac XT5 High Demand Chevrolet Equinox LT Moderate Demand Chevrolet Traverse LT High Demand Dodge Durango GT Very High Demand Dodge Ram 1500 High Demand Ford F250 XLT Moderate Demand Ford Fusion Titanium High Demand Ford Mustang GT Very High Demand GMC Yukon SLT Very High Demand Honda Civic Touring Very High Demand Honda Ridgeline RTL-E Very High Demand Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Moderate Demand Hyundai Santa Fe Sport High Demand Hyundai Sonata Base High Demand Infiniti Q50 Premium High Demand Jeep Compass Sport High Demand Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited High Demand Kia Sorento LX High Demand Lincoln MKC Premiere Moderate Demand Mazda3 Touring Very High Demand Nissan Armada SV Very High Demand Nissan Maxima SV - High Demand Subaru Crosstrek Premium Very High Demand Tesla Model S Very High Demand Toyota Camry SE Moderate Demand Toyota Corolla SE Moderate Demand Toyota Rav 4 XLE High Demand Toyota Sienna XLE Moderate Demand Volvo XC60 T5 Inscription Very High Demand
was going to post the same, but you beat me to it, darn it!
40 seconds????
You’re a darwin candidate if you look away from the road for 2 seconds!
Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!
They do not cause anything. The cause is the driver choosing to pay attention to the devices.
You need a college degree, three or four hands, an instruction manual, and lots of luck just to change the time. I know because I tried to correct the time on my sister’ new car, and had to get out the manual and do seven or eight attempts before I got it set. On my ‘07 Toyota, I press either the hour button or the minute butoon, and I’m done.
It’s getting so you can barely turn on/off the windshield wipers and/or cruise control without a degree in computer programming.

Just curious, will that do automatic resets for DST twice a year?
.
I find the touch screens distractive. You have to look at the device and work through the menu system to get to the function you want. I’ll take knobs and pushbuttons anyday!
Okay, so 50 years of padded dashes, banks of air bags, extra brake lights, mandatory traction control/ABS, lap & shoulder belts, mandatory cameras, headrests that push your head out, and lane change collision avoidance features were all put in to compensate for the day that people would be diddling with their GPS/Entertainment/Communications devices instead of the road?
I’m surprised nobody ever went after drive through windows at fast food places as a cause of distracted driving. After all, the driver is distracted if he/she reaches for a French fry and takes a hand off the steering wheel......
* When I say "intrusive" I'm referring to an audible or visual warning that is designed to capture the driver's attention and therefore can't easily be ignored.
Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!”
Not a surprise at all, it’s coming from some idiot in Connecticut. He is probably quite limited in the basic functions of tying his shoes and taking his morning dump!
It always gauls me how much grief drunk drivers get when they get in an accident, and yet the smuck who runs into someone while eating his mcdonalds burger and drinking hot coffee gets no blame at all.
There's a simple reason for it. The distraction is obvious, but the consequences of the distraction have never been severe enough to warrant a lawsuit.
Do those cars come with a trunk monkey that twists the driver’s arm until they begin to play with the display?
No?
So it’s actually the dumbass driver who’s at fault for not watching the road?
Get out!
The inventor of the touch screen car radio and the CEOs who say they should be in every new car should all be hung.
And Hang the inventor the Presta Valve and the CARB compliant gas can along side of them while we are at it.
