I suspect a lot of those stories are put out there for the purpose of finding leaks and/or destroying the credibility of the news organization that reports it.
As someone else pointed out this morning, seeing four different authors contributing to a report like this in the mainstream media is a huge red flag. That's especially true when the report involves a single, simple event from several months ago that shouldn't require four people to get the facts straight.
