WASHINGTON Days before President Trump has to make a critical decision on whether to hold up the Iran nuclear deal, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis openly split with him on abandoning the agreement, the second senior member of the presidents national security team to recently contradict him.
Mr. Mattis told senators on Tuesday that it was in Americas interest to stick with the deal, which Mr. Trump has often dismissed as a disaster.
Absent indications to the contrary, it is something that the president should consider staying with, Mr. Mattis told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee after being repeatedly pressed on the issue.
The comments were the latest example of how Mr. Trumps instincts on national security to threaten North Korea with destruction and tear up an Iran accord that most experts and allies say is working are running headlong into opposition from his own National Security Council.

Not worried. Trump is America first.
Am I overreacting by saying Mattis needs to be shown the door?
Before throwing Mattis under the bus...consider the source.
Why the Heck are you reading the slimes anyway?
Excellent point. Everything the leftists say is a lie.
Trump doesn’t seem to understand that the Pentagon is not filled with die-hard conservatives. I don’t understand why he’s surrounded himself with so many generals who don’t seem to understand the chain of command.
” I dont understand why hes surrounded himself with so many generals who dont seem to understand the chain of command.”
Personally, I think you would get the best people by finding out who are the most talented people who have not been promoted, or who have been passed over. Often these are the people who are most creative and talented, and who have pissed off the hierarchy because they don’t suck up. I would chose talented people that are disliked by those in charge, and I would then put them in charge of those who were in charge.

Are you saying Mattis did not say this in the Senate hearing toaday:
“If we can confirm that Iran is living by the agreement, if we can determine that this is in our best interest, then clearly, we should stay with it,” Mattis said. “I believe, at this point in time, absent indications to the contrary, it is something the president should consider staying with.”
Or that this did not take place during the hearings:
Sen. Angus King of Maine asked Mattis if he thinks it’s in the national security interests of the United States to stay a part of the international accord.
Mattis said, “Yes, senator, I do.”
Is that what you are saying?
e x a c t l y what? That Mattis did not say those things today at the Senate hearing?
Who can believe the NY Times anymore.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Tuesday the United States should remain in the nuclear deal negotiated during the Obama administration that constrains Iran’s ability to build a nuclear arsenal.
Sen. Angus King of Maine asked Mattis during a congressional hearing if he thinks it’s in the national security interests of the United States to stay a part of the international accord.
Mattis said, “Yes, senator, I do.”
What Mattis said in today’s Senate hearing is everywhere, not just the NY Times.
Mattis is an Obamite.
“Am I overreacting by saying Mattis needs to be shown the door?”
Some of you people and you knee-jerk “X person needs to be fired” boilerplate is getting old.
most generals are self important players
I will take that as “Yes, I am overeacting”
“Am I overreacting by saying Mattis needs to be shown the door?”
N you’re not! For the life of me. I can’t imagine how Trump has managed to come up with this insolent bucket of cocks he’s brought in for his Cabinet secretaries. Sessions, Tillerson, “Spendthrift” Price, and now Mattis. Don’t any of them have a scintilla of loyalty to The President? If is weren’t such a painful and slow process, I’d fire all of them for openly F*cking the President!
