Two days after an attacker opened fire on concert goers in Las Vegas, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc) announced he was shelving legislation to deregulate suppressors.

Ryan has now shelved the Hearing Protection Act, which was introduced into Congress on January 9; it is the legislation containing suppressor deregulation. The Act does not legalize suppressors–as they are already legal–rather, it removes the burdensome process for acquiring them and erases the federal tax that must be paid in order to receive permission to posses one.

Only one Republican in the House of Representatives can be let off the hook. The vote to reelect Paul Ryan as Speaker back in January was 239-189. Pelosi got all 189 Democrat votes. Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky was the only Republican who didn’t vote for Ryan.

More people need to be educated on just what this bill intends otherwise you are just giving a club to the Goebbelsmedia.
Ryan did the right thing. How many GOP would defect because of the bad optics and Goebbelsmedia? Defeating the bill would mean it is gone.
Passing it later would be good and possible.
Some times the knee jerk reactions around here are unbelievable.
If Republicans were smart (a Big If) they would have seen something like this coming and named the suppressor bill The 10 Decibel Reduction Act.
The strangest argument I heard was that “silencers” were needed so as not to annoy the neighbors. Where are these people so close that shooting would annoy the neighbors? I sure don’t want anyone using a silencer when shooting in my vacinity.
Funny how these times of chaos work for the left (Rahm Emmanuel says never let a crisis go to waste) but they always work against the right. They use these opportunities to advance their agenda, while the right is expected to lay low (assuming they can get any lower now). These things, far from slowing the left’s agenda, are used by them to double down. Why can’t the policians putatively on the right do the same thing?
Not really true. This kind of mass shooting is effectively exploited by the left because it plays directly into the gun control story. But other events are used by the right to force stuff through. Most obvious example (and one that doesn’t look good in retrospect) is using 9/11 to start the war with Iraq. There are many laws passed in a victim’s name that are also examples of using a crisis, like Megan’s law. If it wasn’t a white guy shooting, but a muslim refugee, the right would have something to push back on: immigration, attack ISIS. But what are you going to do when it is a white guy with legal guns?
