~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Fort Riley, Kansas Fort Riley is named in honor of Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was established in 1853 as a military post to protect the movement of people and trade over the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails. In the years after the Civil War, Fort Riley served as a major United States Cavalry post and school for cavalry tactics and practice. The post was a base for skirmishes with Native Americans after the Civil War ended in 1865, during which time George Custer was stationed at the fort. The 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division of the United States Army, and is the oldest continuously serving in the Regular Army. It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 during World War I. It was officially nicknamed "The Big Red One" after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed "The Fighting First". The early history of Fort Riley is closely tied to the movement of people and trade along the Oregon and Santa Fe trails. These routes, a result of then popular United States doctrine of "Manifest Destiny" in the middle of the 19th century, prompted increased American military presence for the protection of American interests in this largely unsettled territory. During the 1850s, a number of military posts were established at strategic points to provide protection along these arteries of emigration and commerce. In the fall of 1852, a surveying party under the command of Captain Robert Chilton, 1st U.S. Dragoons, selected the junction of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers as a site for one of these forts. This location, approved by the War Department in January 1853, offered an advantageous location from which to organize, train and equip troops in protecting the overland trails. I'm still a bit numb from learning of Feather's passing from her daughter yesterday. We were friends for several years and she's one of the few Canteeners I've had the pleasure of meeting. We had a delightful week together when she visited us.
Rest in peace, Feathers, as your spirit soars. You will be missed.

That was taken on her birthday a few years ago. I’d sent her a “Happy Birthday” email and said I hoped she’d had a good one. She sent that pic in her reply saying she’d had a great one. One of her daughters took it during the party they had for her.
Somewhere in the gazillion pix I’ve saved over the years there are a couple of pix Hubby snapped when we took her to a cruise-in in our ‘58 Lincoln Continental, but I can’t find them just now. She had such a good time that day.
Guess I need to scoot. Churchill is tapping my leg, letting me know he’s ready to go outside to roll in catnip again. LOL! See ya this evening.

You and Churchill have fun outside! Talk later.
I’m sure she had fun. Did she enjoy all the kitties, too? I don’t think there were quite as many then, but probably enough for good entertainment. :)

Church wasn’t in the mood for catnip rolling today apparently. He just dragged me around for a while and that’s a good thing. More exercise.
Feathers LOVED being surrounded by all the kittehs. LOL! I don’t remember how many we had at the time but the numbers weren’t much different than now. Most of the cats who were here then are gone now though. Her favorite one, Fred, passed away last year at the ripe old age of 17.

She visited me here in Alaska as well.
She got to walk on a glacier and thought that was cool.

I’m so glad y’all got to visit. With her health problems it was probably no mean feat to travel so far, so you were special to her.
Glad Church got his exercise with or without the catnip rolling! LOL!

Her health wasn’t bad back then, though she did get hit pretty hard by our pollen while she was here. A little antihistamine and she was good to go.
He probably didn’t go for the catnip today because I had a camera with me to capture his silliness. You know how contrary kittehs can be. hee!

I know exactly how contrary kittehs can be. That’s why I have so many “sleeping” pictures. I can sneak those in. LOL!

Be glad you aren’t dealing with the contrariness I’m putting up with tonight. These kittehs are just about out of control. I heard a loud crash a couple of minutes ago and found Sabrina in a kitchen cabinet, where she’d knocked a coffee mug on the floor. Had to sweep up the pieces.
She’s still hiding somewhere, knowing I want to wear out her hiney!

Well, that must mean that the full moon can’t be far behind!
Peaches was getting into the lower cabinet the other day. It makes a great cave, but really? Just get OUT! We need better latches! LOL!

Yep, the full moon’s just a couple of nights away and boy, are the cats feeling it!
I’m not sure how she opened the cabinet but she managed.
She’s still in hiding. I guess my bellow got the point across that she was in serious trouble this time.
