Cops backing off busts in South Bronx to avoid lawsuits
New York Post ^ | October 1, 2017 | Shawn Cohen and Bruce Golding

Cops in some crime-ridden South Bronx neighborhoods have all but abandoned aggressive or intuitive policing — to avoid getting sued or otherwise derailing their careers, officers admitted to The Post.

It also comes against the backdrop of a nationwide outcry against aggressive policing. Scores of NFL players have being kneeling during the national anthem at games to protest police brutality.

Several precinct patrol officers recalled incidents in which they didn’t bust suspected drug dealers who were taunting them while recording with cellphone cameras.

In one case, a cop said, neighbors were “leaning out their windows, shouting at us to go away.”

“In the past, we’d stand our ground, start issuing summonses. But we just moved on,” a cop recalled. “It was hard, to be honest.”

The NYPD’s most recent stats show shootings in the precinct have jumped 64 percent, from 14 to 23, so far this year compared to the same period in 2016.

Citywide, shootings have fallen 23 percent in the same time period.

Murders have tripled, from two to six, in the 42nd, while the citywide murder rate fell 24 percent.

I’m a fan of loser pays. Critics say that might deter folks from suing. Hey, turkey, if you don’t think you can win, then don’t sue!

I’m a root, hog, or die kind of a fellow. Unless they’re blind, crippled, or crazy, they can work. Forget welfare.

If they riot, toss ‘em in the can I’ll pay for prison meals.

Ironic. I suspect the people who are lamenting the police brutality would be the first to proclaim that the police were not doing their jobs if they were the victims.

Of course. They’d take ‘em right to court.

One early Tuesday morning I was teaching college, and we discussed their assignment, which was an analysis of how traffic cops in OH had decided not to pull over black drivers for traffic stops in order to avoid accusations of racism. When the class was over, I collected their assignments and went back to my office, but the whole faculty area was empty. I went to the faculty lounge, and found everyone staring at the television set. The second tower was falling. It was 9/11. How much has changed in 16 years? In some areas, sadly very little.

What does that even mean? Barney Fife doesn’t fit your original characterization as military occupiers.

Bronx DA:

Her Bio:

Darcel Clark

And latest "accomplishment" in crime fighting:

"Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark asked Honorable George Grasso, Supervising Judge of Bronx Criminal Court, to vacate nearly 160,000 summons warrants involving low-level quality of life offenses that are 10 or more years old, allowing thousands of Bronxites to advance their lives"

Mmm hmm.

Nice way to clear the backlog and get yourself out of hot water.

If you can’t prosecute low-level life style crimes within ten years, then the Sixth Amendment should kick in and the cases dumped.

“Citywide, shootings have fallen 23 percent in the same time period.

Classic burying the lead. Crime has dropped a lot in NYC this year. The fact that one ghetto neighborhood in the Bronx had more violence this year than last suddenly seems less significant once you know that. That’s why they wait to the end to tell you that the facts make the narrative look suspect.

Maybe true, but how did she end up with so many cases sitting out there?

Since she only took over her job last year, looks like she inherited the problem. Great way to clear the decks!

IOW, it's a problem that will solve itself. Thanks sparklite2. Blame falls on the corrupt and incompetent Mayor A.K.A. DeBlasio.
