Tom Petty died Monday morning after life support was terminated, reports TMZ. The singer was found unconscious Sunday night after a massive cardiac arrest. Paramedics were able to restore a pulse, says TMZ, but his family accepted the inevitability of the singers death, and support was terminated this morning.

The Rock and Roller was known for his rhythmic Florida style. He was famous as early at 19. He transplanted himself to Southern California, where he was known for songs that celebrated Southern California living, such as "Free Falling."

Stunning. One of the few “post Beatles” musicians I actually listened to.

RIP.

Knome gave a presentation at TedMed after sequencing Ozzy's full genome. Results were interesting...

Words fail me. I learned to play and sing because of Tom Petty. He seemed like a big brother all these years. It was just too soon. He was the greatest singer songwriter in the rock genre of all time when you look at his entire body of work.

God Bless his family.

Tom Petty rooted for the Gators, played the Super Bowl and ran down his dream

Thanks dfw. I’m still in shock. I could have seen his show with Joe Walsh a couple of months ago, but I didn’t go. Very sad...

My wife’s is/was growing up best friends with Del Shannon’s niece. We still see her and her mom (Chuck’s sister) every couple of three years or so...my brush with fame!

Losing Elvis was devastating; the recent losses of David Bowie, Glenn Campbell and now Tom Petty make you realize how fast the ‘cycle of life’ spins.

Music is background memory. Glad I was young when the music had melody and great lyrics. Have no idea what is ‘popular’ with the youth today. Sounds like a lot of pot banging and screaming.

Those are my two favorite TP songs. I just realized that the "Mary Jane" he's referring to is weed...after all these year. Duh, ResisTyr! 🎶 Last dance with Mary Jane, One more chance to kill the pain 🎶

No way. Dylan has hundreds of great songs. There is a reason Petty was a backing musician for the Master. He would laugh at your statement.

Tom Petty has an extremely impressive canon of his own. He is ranked up there with the likes of Dylan in many people's minds.

Nobody will ever replace Bob Dylan, but Tom Petty is up in that top tier...

I would also put Tom Petty up there with Bob Dylan in terms of overall quality output. And I say that as a big Bob Dylan fan. They are two artists in which I can pick any of their albums at random and play all the way through without wanting to skip any tracks.

Petty basically took The Byrds and Graham Parsons, and added a bit of a punk edge to it.

“Music legend Tom Petty died late Monday night at age 66 after suffering a heart attack, but some media outlets, including CBS News and Rolling Stone, announced his death hours before he died because of erroneous information they got from the Los Angeles Police Department.”

I always liked Petty’s music but his best work was as Dylan’s band. He always had top-flight musicians in his bands. Of course, you would have to be nuts not to want to play with him.

Like Miles Davis’ groups only the best need apply both had a way of finding talent.
