Preventing Mass Shootings Like the Vegas Strip Attack [Are You Ready For Some Gun Control?]
NY Slimes ^ | Oct 2, 2017 | Nicholas Kristof

Posted on 10/02/2017 10:30:27 AM PDT by upchuck

After the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas, the impulse of politicians will be to lower flags, offer moments of silence, and lead a national mourning. Yet what we need most of all isn’t mourning, but action to lower the toll of guns in America.

We don’t need to simply acquiesce to this kind of slaughter. When Australia suffered a mass shooting in 1996, the country united behind tougher laws on firearms. As a result, the gun homicide rate was almost halved, and the gun suicide rate dropped by half, according to the Journal of Public Health Policy.

Skeptics will say that there are no magic wands and that laws can’t make the carnage go away. To some extent, they’re right. Some criminals will always be able to obtain guns, especially in a country like America that is awash with 300 million firearms. We are always likely to have higher gun death rates than Europe.

But the scale is staggering. Since 1970, more Americans have died from guns (including suicides, murders and accidents) than the sum total of all the Americans who died in all the wars in American history, back to the American Revolution. Every day, some 92 Americans die from guns, and American kids are 14 times as likely to die from guns as children in other developed countries, according to David Hemenway of Harvard.

So while there’s no magic wand available, here are some steps we could take that would, collectively, make a difference.

OK... start the Constitutional process to amend or repeal the Second Amendment. Let Bernie Sanders and Maxine Waters sponsor a bill and get the ball rolling and see how far it gets. The Constitution can be amended, though no one has attempted to my knowledge to amend the Bill of Rights, let them try. I doubt even the most liberal nut jobs have the stomach to amend the Bill of Rights, but no more back handed attempts to gut the Second Amendment through the courts..let liberals put up or shut up.

OMG, it shouldn't be so easy to buy those automatic assault weapons over the internet without a background check and all those clips of armor-piercing bullets! </gungrabbers>

Good point, want to change the law, respect it first. Then, start with the constitution.

"Enforce a ban on possession of guns by anyone subject to a domestic violence protection order. This is a moment when people are upset and prone to violence against their ex-es"

Of course, most of these orders issue from ex parte proceedings where the accused has no right to present a defense, AND, in cases of divorce, up to 90% of these "protection" orders are procured by perjury.

In states where this is the law, once a fraudulent order has been issued, the loss of gun rights is, effectively, permanent.

I don’t know which is worse, the actual tragedy of people getting hurt or killed by some crazy nut, or the predictable whining and calling for gun control anytime something happens.

It is the most predictable thing in politics today. They always wail like stuck pigs and they usually look like stuck pigs now that I think about it; whenever something like this happens. So typically predictable.

I’ll do like I always do unless action is needed; I’ll ignore them.

One or two hunters with scoped deer rifles down below could have stopped or dramatically slowed the shooting. 300 feet up is not out of reach or even a tough shot for a 30-06 or .308. I know few of us carry a high-powered rifle for our concealed carry, but it would have been a nice thing to have in the trunk.

In the University of Texas tower shooting, regular Texans shot at the sniper with hunting rifles, forcing him to stay low until police and prior military civilians could reach him. NV is not TX, and this is not 1966, so it did not go as well. This evil murderer had no one with a rifle getting in his way until SWAT finally got there.

I think the 2014 FBI report said roughly 33000 total of which 11000 were not suicides and called homicides. In tho case homicide included murder, manslaughter, negligence, legal self defense, etc. Of the 11000 about 420 were long guns which includes rifles, ARs, shotguns, muskets, etc.

Yeh that’s probably accurate and only about 200 plus were tactical rifles. If the gun ban crowd was really sincere they would go after handguns but we all know the real agenda is tactical weapons. I refuse to use the term assault rifle. It just plays into the meme.

Funny how the country is on the verge of civil war and voila’ right on time an even bigger than ever mass shooting. Just sayin.

The bodies aren’t cold and they are already trying to advance gun control. It is as inevitable as the sun rising.

The shooter had no criminal record, so it was completely legal for him to purchase a firearm from an FFL or any other person.

I’m sure the police and military are going get “smart” guns.

And if they pass “safe storage” laws, how are they going to be enforced? By random inspections by the police without a search warrant? How will they know who has a gun?

And microstamping is a liberal dream. Maryland required handgun manufacturers to submit a fired casing from every gun sold in the state. It solved exactly zero crimes. And anyone planning on committing a crime is not going to leave behind a calling card.

Yet, those same glass-chinned totalitarians are protected by guns, are they not?

Presuming they pass the illegal ‘ban’ (in the same vein as the illegal laws CURRENTLY ‘on the books’), does any doubt there would be no such ‘turn-in’ by: Forest Service, DoEd, IRS....let alone the disbanding of the secret service and the like?! BWAhahhaa.

Bet the Scots/Assuies/etc. in govt are still protected, at taxpayer expense.

From a real world view, there is no stopping someone of evil intent from carrying out an attack.

What you CAN do, is be able to actively and aggressively RESPOND and minimize that attacks impact.

"Well, gee DC, how do we do that?"

End victim disarmament zones and stop persecuting those of us who take an active role in our own defense. Had concert or hotel security been armed, possibly even with a couple teams for overwatch, this idiot could have been stopped during his first mag dump. Instead, people died as he fumbled his way through agonizingly slow mag change after mag change until SWAT got close enough that he capped himself.

Victim disarmament NEVER works. Victim EMPOWERMENT is the only proven deterrent.
