Opinion is divided this morning on Twitter among people who, unlike me, know more than the most basic basics about firearms. Its not a matter of mere curiosity; as you (should) know, fully automatic weapons have been illegal in the U.S. for decades, which is why even mass shooters hellbent on murder unto death never use them. If Stephen Paddock used a machine gun, how on earth did he get it?

Yeh I just posted that same theory on another thread. It sounded like an AK to me and it was making a clacking sound like maybe a cheap Chinese AK. But you are right if he messed up the sear pin when he took off the safety it would fire til the mag was empty. He sure didn’t fire 800 round in 10 minutes from one AK. The barrel would have melted down. Must have been using two weapons and moving from one window to another.
The laws say we can carry our guns pretty much anywhere...In Nevada, schools, state and federal buildings are mostly off limits. But taking one into my hotel room, to church, etc., that is legal. I, like others in this thread, carry our guns when we travel, checking the laws before hand, yes, but my gun goes with me. I’ve never heard of a hotel asking about guns, doubt they ever would. Consider that Vegas, for exam, hosts gun shows, conventions, etc.
What I think is likely “fake” is:
1. 10 fully automatic weapons in the room
2. Fired over 700 shots.
But yes, it “could be true”. However, the media shouldn’t be reporting what “could be true”.
Wow, that number seems incredibly low.
You can hear the AK clack from a cellphone video taken from 2000 feet away? Were you perhaps a sonar chief? If not, you missed your calling.
It's unquestionably full auto fire, and from something much larger than 30 round magazines...
Been around firearms for 65 years - nobody can pull the trigger that fast for that many rounds. Emptying a 5 shot revolver or 6 shot rifle in under a second is impressive but if you were to ask him, he’d be happy to tell you that I’m not the ignorant one here.
So Fox news just reported Paddock had several AR15’s that were converted to full auto. I figured it was an AK. Did not sound like an AR on the video. Although that clacking sound could have been the echo through the buildings. I still want to see those weapons.
M16's, if I'm not mistaken, fire .223 at about 900 rounds/min. That's what it sounded like, as far as firing rate.
So, judging by the rate of fire, I'm guessing it was something more akin to M16. It did not sound like (50%) lower rate AK47 fire to me.
I'm no expert, but I can tell the difference between 600 and 900 rounds per minute, and this was closer to 900...
AK’s and AR’s sound different. We have both. But Fox just reported the guy had several AR’s that were converted to full auto. You can convert AR’s but the average guy on the street ain’t gonna do it. I’ll be curious to see those weapons.
It sounded like a belt feed SAW-249.
More senseless and useless chatter. Go ahead and spend hours arguing over something that can’t be settled until the police reveal it. Have at it.
Yep - full auto.
Had a guy (copied) send me the following:
Nobody you know, you mean.
You don't know anyone who shoots competitively, do you? Ever heard of Jerry Miculek? No? Search his name on You Tube, unless you'd rather continue in your ignorance.
Was happy to respond: Been around firearms for 65 years - nobody can pull the trigger that fast for that many rounds. Emptying a 5 shot revolver or 6 shot rifle in under a second is impressive but if you were to ask him, hed be happy to tell you that Im not the ignorant one here.
Always some fantasy-based 'expert" around to nay say facts that they don't like - they probably have dreams about being superhuman heroes and parade around in colored underwear when nobody's looking....
Grew up in NRA family and Dad raised me up with guns - for 4 years, we were a pretty competent team at local competitions - won a good number of the competitions - doesn't make me a quick draw artist or a world class shot/sniper, but I've had lots of experience in my 65 years....I do have some spandex-nylon underwear in different colors though...;-)
Fired 700+ rounds over several minutes unopposed is very likely true. Agree 10 full autos unlikely, probably semis or mostly semis, but I would attribute that to journalist idiocy rather than intentional “fake news.” But I thought the smoke detector angle was being doubted.
He apparently was quite wealthy. From what? Just playing poker? Let’s see his taxes.
No, based on my experience with cooking grilled-cheese sandwiches, I would expect that a smoke detector could be set off after only a hundred or so rounds being fired.
I’ve read a lot of the posts in this thread. There are more questions than answers at this point, lots of speculation. How do we know that this guy acted alone? How do we know that he was actually the shooter? All that we know for sure is that he rented the room and he was found dead in that room.
Everyone is wondering how he got them all in. I assume in parts, in suitcases?
Maybe hotel parking lots ought to have some way to test what’s in the vehicles?
