Opinion is divided this morning on Twitter among people who, unlike me, know more than the most basic basics about firearms. Its not a matter of mere curiosity; as you (should) know, fully automatic weapons have been illegal in the U.S. for decades, which is why even mass shooters hellbent on murder unto death never use them. If Stephen Paddock used a machine gun, how on earth did he get it?

I would tend to agree, but don’t know if this tells anything meaningful about the weapon used, other than they were automatic.
Clearly the fire came in large bursts, followed by sllence, then another large burst... this wasn’t someone trying to maximize accuracy... fire a few rounds, re-aim fire some more... etc... this was squeeze until clip is empty.. reload/change weapon, repeat...
“Get ready for the gun grabbers, who I am sure are jumping with glee at this tragedy.”
Ain’t that the truth. They love it when someone is killed by a gun and especially when a white man is the shooter. Like icing on the cake to them.
Another chance to tighten their totalitarian grip on the proles. Every liberal is a fascist.
Going to listen to what you are talking about. I definitely may have missed that
Yes. So many people are confessed experts. They don't know squat.
10 x 30 round magazines is 300 rounds. (I usually download to 28 rounds). 56 rounds can be fired in 60 seconds, including the mag exchange.
If the shooter was trying to simulate full-auto, good. More misses at his 400+ yard distance. Slower aimed fire would have been more effective.
But then what do I know? Facts about the weapon and shooting environment are hard to come by. Lighting and visibility at night is key. Ambient lighting and a 4-9x power optic would have made for devastating results.
I heard the video.
It sounded familiar. Years ago, I had a Chinese SKS that was my “farm gun”. One day, my father asked when it became full automatic.
The sear was worn down, and one trigger pull would start it firing and not stop. Wasn’t a high rate a fire, but it sounded very similar.
Nobody you know, you mean.
You don't know anyone who shoots competitively, do you? Ever heard of Jerry Miculek? No? Search his name on You Tube, unless you'd rather continue in your ignorance.
Thank you!
“if he had obtained them legally, there will be a pretty strong paper trail. “
That’s what I think as well.
He supposedly had ten guns, or so, in the room.
I agree
32 stories up is ~640 ft. up. For the sake of argument, assume he was firing at a 45 degree angle. That would be a distance of over 900 ft. (~275 m). I've personally shot a 4 inch group at 100 m with a bolt action .300 win mag, and that was under calm conditions shooting flat. If he was shooting .223 or 5.56, I don't know that I'd trust the accuracy past 150 m. Ballistic videos I've seen have the round start tumbling.
There are over 500 wounded, but we don't know how many of those are from GSW or injuries sustained while fleeing.
Thanks.
I’d think it unlikely too.
Hmm... smuggled in from Mexico?
Man, what if they were to find an “Operation Fast and Furious” weapon in his room?
That's an excellent point. I hadn't considered that.
volume of fire suggests the murderer used more than one weapon. Otherwise heat induced cycling problems would have occurred. If not using full-auto, volume of fire also suggests use of a “bump-fire” adapter. A little practice someone can near-on simulate automatic rate of fire with a bump-fire. B-F’s may be hard to find but last time I checked they’re legal. Also easier than “easy” to fit to at least the AR-AK family of weapons.
He was randomly shooting into a crowd. He wasn’t trying to assassinate a specific target in the crowd.
Definitely not controlled breath, exhale, half through breath hold, clear front sight post blurry background, slow steady squeeze, follow through
Understood. I'm not arguing the lethality of the event. I'm arguing that these were select fire weapons and not bump-fired.
Not that easy.
The bolt carrier group is different. Trigger assembly is also diferent
Oh please no one would say anything he checked in with a little rolley and then brought up the guns one two at a time in a golf bag or some chit he dint call the bell boy to bring them up
