FINDING THE PATTERNS FINDING THE PATTERNS Critics have faulted the role the news media has played in highlighting the president's inflammatory style, saying that whats lost is a deeper focus on the countrys more pressing needs.
NEW YORKOver the past week, the news media covered a number of the countrys most pressing issues: ongoing threats from North Korea, the Senates efforts to dismantle Obamacare, the Trump administrations late-Sunday-night announcement of its Travel Ban 3.0.
President Trumps offensive quip about NFL players taking a knee during the national anthem last Friday at a campaign rally in Huntsville, Ala., however, was the story that resonated most around the country and by far.
Many critics, however, have faulted the role the news media has played in highlighting Mr. Trumps inflammatory style, identifying a disturbing symbiosis between news outlets seeking viewers in a competitive marketplace and a showman who is master of the provocative tweet. Whats lost is a deeper focus on the countrys more pressing needs, many say.
Hes like catnip to the traditional broadcast media, says Paul Levinson, a professor of media studies and culture critic at Fordham University in New York. When Trump says something like that, they probably realize that it makes things worse, but they cant help themselves. Its still shocking.
On Monday, reporters asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders whether the presidents crude statement had taken up so much oxygen in the news that little was now being said about his legislative agenda.
Well, thats determined by you guys, Ms. Sanders said, adding that the president was being patriotic and taking the lead on this issue.

Hes like catnip to the traditional broadcast media.
And the Zinger by the press secretary is great. :D Well, thats determined by you guys.
Team Trump releases a daily cage of rabbits knowing that the fools in the press will chase them.
Is the NFL controversy one of them? Maybe.
I am worried the NFL is a distraction from an Amnesty Bill they are going to try and sneak by.
A better analogy: “It’s like dragging a $100 bill through a trailer park.”
To answer the headline question: I doubt the “media” got played, considering how experienced they are having helped the 0 administration distract the American public for the last eight years.
Hey - what did trailer park folks ever do to deserve being compared to the media?
;-)
That’s so funny. Yesterday I posted that PDJT’s “kneel tweet” was to point out a shiny object for the MSM to chase so he could do his job. They’re so predictable. Sanders’ response was perfect. :)
> did media play into Trump’s ‘distraction tactics’?
They don’t have a clue yet. Trump turned a simple issue into a 1st amendment quagmire. Until last week, NFL teams could fire/suspend players for pretty much any reason they wanted. There was no 1st amendment issue no matter how much the MSM claimed. Now, teams would look like they are acting as an agent of the government if they fired anyone - and that’s a 1st amendment problem.
Players cannot be fired for protesting (without a HUGE legal problem that didn’t exist last week). MSM cannot say the firings are a legal employer prerogative (though they’ll try) without contradicting themselves. Dems and MSM may find themselves defending “flag haters” every week of the NFL and NBA seasons. That’s a good part of election 2018. And MLB started to join them this week, which would mean the entire election is about “flag hating” Ds vs. R.
Ds have to find a way to counter Trump’s “flag hater” persuasion abilities (see Scott Adams for his abilities in that area) or “put the black players in their place”. If they think this is “distraction” rather than “attack”, they don’t have a clue what’s coming.
Well I say, If they take a knee, just giveem the FINGER!!
And, bravo NRA, herein: https://youtu.be/z3j1ZKz7PWQ
It’s great having a President who speaks out for OUR CONCERNS...in an honest way. There’s nothing wrong with that... let the liberals stuff it at some pity party.
Why shouldn’t half the Americans be able to have a President who’s taken the red pill and can speak the truth?
Not just the fools in the media, notice how little anybody has talked about the latest failure to repeal ACA. There’s a whole lotta not paying attention going on.
The problem there is McConnell, McCain, and few other GOP neverTrumpers. Breaking that cabal will take more than the distractions that occupy the press.
It’s not about the distractions that occupy the press, it’s about the distractions that occupy Trump’s base. How many folks haven’t pressured their rep to back Trump’s agenda on things like ACA and the budget because they’ve been too busy burning their NFL jerseys? You can see it right here on FR, there’s more stories about the NFL in an hour than there have been about Trump’s agenda all week. Forget paying no attention to the man behind the curtain, people have gotten so wound up on this they’ve forgotten about the building the curtain is in.
“President Trumps offensive quip”
Again, the MSM confuses the rooster’s crowing with the sun rising in the morning.
(But at least thus far the MSM hasn’t accused the president of contacting the NFHell and/or team owners and suggesting that their players get on their knees.)
President Trump merely responded to this BS by defending America; it’s not surprising, about half the country seems to have forgotten that the US president is expected to do that ... defend America, not denigrate her.
And President Trump knows—Sir Charles of Barkley to the contrary—that young people look up to sports figures. That’s why we’ve seen the disgraceful mimicking of the NFL’s players disgusting behavior by children.
Stick the word “offensive” where the sun don’t shine, CSM.
Reminder. In your posts and e-mails and whenever possible, make sure you repeat “President Trump” as many times as possible. It drives lefties absolutely bat****.
Bookmark to read later. Article was pretty negative about Trump. He probably is playing the media, but I don’t think he’s playing his “base.”
