So, it’s population as of this year is 3,676,389. The debt for each individual on that island is about 20K, right? Or do my math skills still suck?

Default PR. Do it today, don’t wait. ‘In the face of such a crisis, we entirely repudiate our debt and will no longer be making any payments on them, now, or in the future. We will direct any and all finances which would have gone to paying that debt to paying for the disaster and the long recovery that will follow.’

And move on while the purse strings in Washington are loose and anyone who objects looks like an animal. Besides, the leeches charged usury rates for those loans ‘due to the risk of default.’ Since they’ve already priced in this result, you can do it with a clear conscious.

I always look to Marc Anthony for political and disaster relief commentary. As an entertainer, he really knows his stuff.

In ancient times court jesters, the forerunners of modern entertainers, were held in particularly low esteem. Their status was just above that of slaves.

In England jesters were referred to as "licensed fools". I guess the modern equivalent would be "famous fools".

If celebrities really cared about Puerto Rico they would buy the island, repair the infrastructure and hire the local people as their servants.

We will be footing the bill for PR. What happened: the politicians declared it a specially-protected government-certified victim group and poured money into it. What should have happened: Puerto Ricans should have started businesses, produced things, and made themselves prosperous.
One is left with the impression that just maybe the tropical island mentality doesn’t lend itself very well to getting out and working!

Drop in the bucket compared to you and me, as we owe $80k each for the federal debt, not counting all the promises made by state and local entities.

I believe FEMA and Trump response to PR is far better than people are saying....and I believe Trump will do far more for PR than the past Pres and Admin.

I understand what you’re saying, but if it’s OK for PR to get away with such debt, why don’t we let everyone who lives way past their means just get a free pass?

It is called bankruptcy.

The USSR went through in in our recent lifetime.

Back in the mid 90’s my company had a retreat in PR, and we stayed at the luxurious “El Conquistador” hotel.

But, I remember going from the airport to the hotel, and the squalid conditions. All houses with high fences, and bars on their windows.

We were told to NOT leave the hotel grounds, except in “groups”.

It’s like the whole island was a criminal enterprise.

I’d NEVER go there on my own for a vacation, or anything.

UGH! I didn’t even try to do that math. I forgot ours is in the trillions now, not billions. Showing my age I guess....

I went with a group of kids to Miami in 1981 or 82. We were told the same. Do NOT venture out at night, and in daylight walk in groups of 5 or more. I can only imagine how much worse PR is....

I think the comment about debt crisis in PR is that there is nowhere to borrow any more money to recover now, so US government will bare the majority of expense, as they are US Citizens. May as well at some point make them a state, and get the taxes collected after recovery to make way for new services like electricity and phones, etc. This will be 10X more expensive than Harvey in TX, or Maria in Florida/southeast.

Maybe dropping supplies by aircraft/helicopter in isolated areas would help, so those suffering get some relief in PR would be a good decision for Trump. FEMA will do well in cities and towns, but rural looks like a real challenge to get to via pics on internet.

No Trump did not insult PR, it was to start a conversation about how will we get money and how will PR ever pay back their debts now?

You’re right, he did not insult them. But the liberal fake news were crucify him if he’s simply said “God bless PR”. He’d have mentioned God and that’s soooo taboo.....

There may be a need to clean up a lot more than Hurricane damage while rebuilding infrastructure!

There are much easier ways to access all areas. Puerto Rico is an island. Boats can access most of the island perimeter and thus reduce distances considerably.

If Clinton were president, Puerto Rico would be given a bailout, potentially using global warming settlements as cover by saying it is our fault the hurricane hit you, here’s all the money to cover your debts and rebuild, too.

Bankrupt the island and let the new owners deal with it.

I saw video of some volunteers trying to get to remote areas, after using boats, and could not get through tangled mess caused by Hurricane...that was were I thought dropping in supplies might be useful. I think coast guard could help along w other boats/ships.

I don’t see anything untrue about what he said. But of course the MSM will use it to make him seem heartless.

Aaaaaand there it is. Tweeters Tear Into Donald Trump For 'Blaming' Puerto Rico Over Maria Devastation

Apparently reading comprehension is not taught well in schools anymore.
