With higher deer population, Minn. wolf numbers jump 25 percent

DULUTH — Minnesota's wolf population jumped 25 percent in the past year, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said Monday, Sept. 25, in large part to an increasing northern deer herd.

The DNR said its annual survey showed an estimated 2,856 wolves spread among 500 packs, up from 2,278 wolves in 438 packs in the 2015-2016 survey.

Wolf numbers had remained flat or declined some for several years before this year's jump.

DNR officials said the wolf numbers are up because there are more deer in northern Minnesota for them to eat. Higher deer densities after three mild winters allow for more wolves, biologists said. Deer numbers in the wolf range are up about 22 percent over last year.

Deer are the big drivers of the wolf population, regardless of hunting and trapping seasons, unless you are being really extreme in the harvest," said John Erb, DNR wolf research scientist. "When deer numbers go up, wolf numbers go up."

In my deer zone this year, the DNR believes that there are way too many deer, so, if you buy a license, you may shoot either a buck or a doe.

They’ve done this in the past and the results caused a years long lack of deer.

I’d be glad to send you some of our deer from the San Fran Bay Area. We are overrun. We need more mountain lions.

They got a real problem with them in the UP of Michigan.

Cattle farmers around there are adopting burros from down here and setting them out with the cattle. Donkeys will KILL a wolf or coyote. One farmer told me he hasnt lost one calf to a wolf attack since he did that.

Guess the wolves cant quite figure it all out.

When I used to travel to the San Jose area for work, I would hike the parks and hills.

Flushed more mules than I had ever seen.

Flushed a couple of those big hairy spiders, too.

Can’t spell tarantula.

;-)

Gotcha. I can’t imagine any kind of deer in San Fransisco!

Actually - I went down there once and drove north across the Golden Gate Bridge. I was pretty amazed at how undeveloped it was to the north, and not that far out from town either. Pretty place.

There are a lot further down the peninsula. Seems like every two or three weeks, there's a deer strike on the 280 on my commute to or from work in Palo Alto. A couple of years ago, we even had a sighting of a mountain lion near my office campus - with so many deer, I'm surprised there haven't been more.
