The Steelers will be on the sideline during the national anthem in future games, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and defensive end Cam Heyward said during a news conference Monday.
Roethlisberger, via a statement posted on his website, said he has regrets over the Steelers decision to wait in the tunnel during the national anthem at Sundays game in Chicago, but that the teams intent was not to protest the song, the flag or the military.
Roethlisberger said that he personally believes that protests have no place during the national anthem, but that the idea was to show unity as a team in the wake of president Donald Trump saying NFL teams should fire players who kneel for the anthem.

I was unable to sleep last night and want to share my thoughts and feelings on our teams decision to remain in the tunnel for the National Anthem yesterday. The idea was to be unified as a team when so much attention is paid to things dividing our country, but I wish we approached it differently. We did not want to appear divided on the sideline with some standing and some kneeling or sitting.
As a team, it was not a protest of the flag or the Anthem. I personally dont believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest. For me, and many others on my team and around the league, it is a tribute to those who commit to serve and protect our country, current and past, especially the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice.
I appreciate the unique diversity in my team and throughout the league and completely support the call for social change and the pursuit of true equality. Moving forward, I hope standing for the Anthem shows solidarity as a nation, that we stand united in respect for the people on the front lines protecting our freedom and keeping us safe. God bless those men and women.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, Benny boy. Coward.
Amazing what the prospect of losing MEGA $$$$$ will do to a man.
The horse has already left the barn.
I wish I am wrong, but this reads like something written for him by a PR hack, in response to the reaction of Steeler fans nationwide. In any case, it is an attempt at walking back the error; may there by many such more attempts over the next few days.
It doesn’t matter what they do now. The NFL can go to Hell.
Oh, NOW he sees...
TFB.
You’re history.
The most critical decision of his character on the field, and he failed.
Is this the first indication that the NFL is starting to feel the heat?
I suspect you are a man of good conscience or you would not have had a sleepless night.
Too late.
What’s causing him to lose sleep is the evaporation of future income.
Perhaps a Medicaid-funding football game ticket tax is in order on tickets costing more than $20.
Brace yourself, here comes the diversity.
Dear Ben, if it was not a protest of the flag or the anthem, you should have had your ASS ON THE FIELD! You guys seriously f’ed up Ben, I mean seriously majorly f’ed up, and now the S@$t is flying and you’ve got a huge target right on your face. Time to face the consequences Ben.
Too late.
I think he’s just jealous that Alejandro got all the attention.
The leftist broadcasters and media are more to blame in this than anyone except Kapernick and the League officials.
ESPN has not been watched in my house for almost a year. I still watch college ball, but not on ESPN. They can ESAD.
Then why did you do it?............................
Hey Ben
Ask Rocky Blier what he would have done
What team UNITY when there are those who you admit would have dissed the FLAG
