Steelers black coach unhappy Army vet Villanueva stood for the anthem, but look at his T-shirt sales soar!(Full Title)
This Well Defend. Thats the U.S. Army motto that Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva honored when he stood for the national anthem before an NFL game.
And by this, the Army motto refers to the United States of America not the National Football League.
The Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, whos black, apparently thinks Army veterans should place their transient football teams above their country. B*tch, please.
Tomlin was upset that Villanueva who did three tours of duty in Afghanistan broke ranks by standing to respect the Star-Spangled Banner while his teammates hid like hood rats in the locker room.
At a post-game press conference, Tomlin expressed disappointment that Villanueva respected the American flag that he risked his life fighting for.
I was looking for 100% participation, we were gonna be respectful of our football team, Tomlin said (see video at 2:28). Many of them were not going to accept the words of the President, so we decided to not take the field.
Coach Tomlin was upset that the former Army Ranger put his country before his football team. Keep in mind that football players are traded all the time, so its not like the allegiance is two-sided.

The problem as I see it is that the Steelers are an institution where fans have a blue collar hard working frame of mind.Coaches come and go.When the porch monkey Tomlin is replaced by a coach that puts America before his skin color I will be back as an ardent fan.Till then they can all go to hell.

FUMT
Tomlin is ticked because just twenty minutes beforehand he had been crowing to a CBS sideline reporter about how his team would demonstrate “unity” by staying in the locker room.
Your entitled to your opinion, he is too.
The NFL is not showing the pre-game, and if the players stand or not, to do so would be catastrophic, and fans would watch the pre-game, and if they did not stand, they would change the channel, now it may not bother the team, but when your talking advertisers...well, that is the bottom line. If people do not tune in, the advertising costs are wasted.
Follow the money. Its what pays their salaries. Personally, I read the news online, and if a team did not respect and stand, I did not watch it. I did not watch the advertisement, and where we may not change the teams mind. Advertisers certainly will.
They do this because outside of the football stadium, nobody listens to them, nobody cares about them. Push it hard enough, and it will extend into the stadium such as has happened with Colin Kapernick.
To effectively protest this bad behaviour, I encourage well written e-mails to the advertisers.
In the end, its about the money, for a team to survive IMO.
Trump should invite this man to the White House and give him the Medal of Freedom—He was brave to stand for the nation.
Yes, what about Alejandro Villanueva’s free speech rights? For that matter, what about mine? Do I have the right to make my political views known to my employer’s clients even if they greatly offend those clients and my employer loses business because of my big mouth? Will my employer (or pretty much any employer) stand by me or you in such a situation?
No freedom of expression for Pam Geller and Milo, because...NAZI!
Most of the hoodrats couldn’t get in.
He is a “white Hispanc,” so he is to be ridiculed and disgraced!
Excellent way to put it... I can't possibly see how this will end well for the Kneelers. It would appear that MT has got himself into a situation of his own making that is now impossible to extricate himself from without doing serious damage, not the least is with the fans.
Won’t watch a Steelers game this year. In fact, won’t watch hardly any game this year. Don’t disrespect the American Flag and National Anthem - protest in some other fashion if you feel you millionaire black players are oppressed.
Dunno about y'all, but I'm lovin' every minute of all those seditious, cowardly, truly racist bastards and their cuck enablers being spit-roasted over the white hot fire of fans' and patriots' well-targeted opprobrium !
And coach, we are unhappy with you. You apparently are not a real American.
I saw last night they said he was one of eight who had been in the service
There is nothing, zero, nada, about the First Amendment and Freedom of Speech involved here.
If I wanted to wear the logo of my company and stand outside their headquarters (or anywhere for that matter)and express my opinion on a subject they disagreed with (especially if it reflected poorly in their market) would I expect to remain employed with them?
Of course not. I would fully expect to be disciplined at best, and fired at worst.
Can I take my company logo off and express my opinions in a public way? Yes, but but there are limits even to that.
If I say something offensive and repugnant in a very public way and it makes it out to my employers and they become embroiled with it (such as Facebook or appearing on NBC nightly news) can I expect there to be no consequences from my employer? No, I can’t, especially if it alienates the customer base.
For the NFL, I very much fault the players, but just as much (and even more so) fault the NFL for not cracking down on this, and the franchise owners for not cracking down on it.
But to frame this as a freedom of speech issue is to not have grasp of the facts.
And it doesn’t just extend to causes that embrace the stupidity of the fable that black men are disproportionately murdered by white police officers which is easily refuted by statistics provided by our own government.
This also extends to issues we hold near and dear to us.
The rule of thumb is that a company is going to (and should) be able to dictate the terms on which an employee practices freedom of speech. Smart people understand that saying anything that a company agrees or disagrees with ON COMPANY TIME may well get you fired if it impacts the bottom line.
You don’t have the right to speak your mind on company time, and neither should these NFL players. And when you are on a field, company property, with the game getting ready to start, and wearing both the emblems of your franchised team AND the emblem of the league granting franchises, you do not have a First Amendment Right to both keep your job and speak your mind.
That this is happening is the fault of the League, the franchises, and the players.
You should listen to his comments... they are spot on.
Unbelievable. I don't recognize my country anymore.
God bless former Army Ranger Alejandro Villanueva!
