The author is a Sanders kook. His premise is that there are conservatives, liberals, and right-thinking people who agree with him. And the liberals of whom he speaks are, supposedly, Adam Smith liberals.The reality is, of course, that the meaning of liberal was essentially inverted between the Adam Smith era and the present day. According to Safire's New Political Dictionary, this occurred in the 1920s.
Anyone who tries to argue liberalism without understanding that the words meaning was hijacked a century ago is, to be charitable, naturally going to be confused.
