President Donald Trump criticizes NFL player protests, says fans should exit stadiums

President Donald Trump criticized NFL players who lodge protests during the pregame national anthem, saying Friday night that he wished those players would be released and encouraging fans who are offended to walk out of stadiums.

Speaking at a political rally in Huntsville, Alabama, Trump said: "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a b---- off the field right now. Out. He's fired! He's fired!"

Trump said the protests, which became public last year when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled for a preseason national anthem, are "hurting the game."

Trump didn't mention Kaepernick or any other NFL player specifically during the speech. The QB opted out of his contract with the 49ers during the offseason and has not been signed by a new team since.

"The only thing you could do better," Trump said, "is if you see it, even if it's just one player, leave the stadium. I guarantee things will stop. Things will stop. Just pick up and leave. Pick up and leave. Not the same game anymore, anyway."

Trump went on to say referees are "ruining the game" by calling 15-yard penalties for "beautiful" tackles. He also said that NFL ratings are down "massively, massively" because people prefer watching him. NFL ratings dropped eight percent in 2016 compared to 2015.

An NFL spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on what Trump said.

I wouldn’t watch the NBA if all the players were in the Freedom Caucus. Some things are beyond partisanship.

I suspect that the NFL will cower in the face of the anti-American, anti-Veteran, anti-sports tradition and shameful "protests", and do something truly squeamish like remove our Anthem altogether.

Might a successful replacement or competing league ultimately happen? A league with (personal wish list) strict standards of conduct and appearance and include frequent drug screening? Oh, and bonuses for academic achievement?

Ha ha ha! Trump is too awesome! The best part is, the liberals are so stupid, they actually think he means it.

Trump nails it!

Glad he’s calling out these losers for insulting our flag and our veterans.

NFL will go down another 5% after these comments. People will get on the Trump train for sure!

I really wish he hadn’t said that part. It made it about him,and not the flag.

“There’s the Trump we remember.”

Absolutely. I really don’t think he has changed much. He’s just having a hell of a time dealing with all the alligators in the swamp, and the RINOs in his backyard.

Absolutely, me too. I love Trump but he is wrong on this one. Go Roy Moore, come on Alabama!

Ahahaha! That one's going to have 'em in a tizzy for days and then he's going to whack them over the head with their own excuses, it was because of the election. But they can't help themselves, they're going to rant on and on about this because it just sounds so un-PC and that drives them nuts.

Good opportunity to watch EXCELLENT, wide open football on a 150 x 65 yard field, without the ‘colour’ politics of the National Felons League. It’s called the CFL!

Go, Trump!

And to the NFL I say:

Turn out the lights. The Party’s over...
