On Valentines Day, the WhiteBox art gallery in New York City hosted a runway show with a political twist. The diverse group of models featured in Illegal Fashion wore dresses made of canvas, linen, burlap, and recycled paper. Painted with splotches of bold colors, the garments bore provocative phrases like I am illegal, deport me, and ICE me.
Artist Maria de Los Angeles curated the show with Juan Puntes de Los Angeles also designed the dresses modeled. The 29-year-old has a personal connection to the garments, as well as to the messages painted on them.
Im undocumented, she says. So a lot of the show was about my identity. There is a large range of immigrant experiences. There are a lot of stereotypes, both negative and positive.
Illegal Fashion not only aimed to shine a spotlight on the immigrant experience, but also to draw attention to the fact that the work of immigrants drives the fashion business.

Mexico doesn’t have a fashion industry?
Deport all the fashion victims.
Yes, no more Mexican Spanish
Sending the DACAs to Mexico will jump start Mexicos fashion industry.
“Mexico doesnt have a fashion industry?”
It does. No more ridiculous than that in NY apparently.
But, of course, there is far less money in it, which is the real point of all this.

No, you're ILLEGAL. CRIMINAL. PARASITE!
That’s a Flamenco dancer’s costume-it is from Spain-the Mexican fashion industry would probably be by a model with bleached blonde hair wearing a brightly colored lowcut, tight dress with the hem 4-6 inches above the knee, and f*** me pumps on her feet-she would be shown walking on a hiking trail or a beach-or anyplace else where her attire was too formal and totally inappropriate.
Not being mean or disparaging of Latinas-I’m a Latina-but I’ve seen women dressed like that every place I’ve even gone to in Mexico-and at events like Spurs games in SA-also see female tourists from Mexico out here at the tourist venues-clattering and stumbling over rocks in stiletto heels along the riverbank or on the deck of a natural food restaurant in a grove of trees the middle of a ranch-hilarious..
Oops-”would probably be represented by”...
That actually looks sensible compared to what I’ve observed, even out here...
lol
HOW ABOUT all these illegals may have LEARNED something in schools here and millions going back who understand what true capitalism and democracy is will fight for it there.
Instead of mooching off of our ancestors’ blood.
Oh, dear! What shall I do without a burlap and canvas dress? There goes the Christmas party outfit.... ;)
Once again, ICE was not to be found.
Thats Spanish.
A very ugly version of the Sevillana dress.
Some of these are pretty awful too -

And losing the NYC fashion industry would mean what to the national economy???? A big bonus I expect; gazillions not going to support a selfish, diva-driven, business and moral ethics corrupt industry.
In general I agree with this, as it relates to the biggest (design and marketing) houses (companies).
It would be a big impact if the general run of the mill design firms folded.
Women like to shop for new clothes (and some men are really into that also). It’s a decent industry if they provide decent cutting edge items.
If they are going to game stuff like this, a pox on them.
