Schumer Pushes Algae Plan
East Hampton Star ^ | September 21, 2017 | By Christopher Walsh

Senator Charles Schumer has called on Congress to quickly pass the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act, which he said would help combat the rise in toxic algae found in Long Island waterways. Left unchecked, said Mr. Schumer, these toxic blooms could contaminate Long Island’s drinking water and damage economies dependent on fishing and recreation.

Starting in 2019, it would authorize $22 million per year for five years to help conduct research on harmful algal blooms and continue an interagency working group to advance the understanding of hypoxia, or low oxygen, and harmful algal blooms. The bill also requires that the task force submit to Congress a scientific assessment of harmful algal blooms in coastal waters and freshwater systems at least every five years.

How do you control harmful algae by studying it for five years. We tried that with North Korea’s nuclear program, and that didn’t work out so well.

But I thought they were going to use it as a bio fuel or something - like Bush wanting to plant saw grass or some such to produce fuel for cars or something something.

Bring in some manatees.

Don’t they eat this stuff?

All those New Yorkers go to Florida.

This would help balance everything out and keep Long Island from tipping over.

$10s of billions go to various government agencies (e.g. CDC, EPA) every year who prioritize things like this, and perform research, and take action when needed.

If they haven’t prioritized this to be worth $millions, they probably should not be overruled by Dr Chuckie. If this is “necessary” but they don’t have the budget, we should have a discussion/legislation (at the agency’s request, not the senator’s) about EVERYTHING they do and if they need a bigger budget to include this. Even with a bigger budget, they should not listen to Dr Chuckie on specific priorities unless he resigns from the senate and is hired as one of their scientists and accepted as a subject matter expert in this area.

Clearly, a product of the Swamp...

Only problem is, it takes like a couple million years for this algae to turn to oil, the way the environmentally correct program would be run.

It is possible to make a substance called kerogen (the vital ingredient in crude oil) from most forms of organic matter, within an hour or two under industrial conditions, a process known as Thermal Depolymerization.

We have known how, for quite a few years. Don’t have to be patient with finicky algae cultures.

The chemistry is pretty straightforward.

Algae blooms are natural. Our cattle ponds use to get the once in a while during hot dry summers.

Chuck Schumer... city boy.

This smells like pork.
The great lakes have already been studying toxic algae blooms. Save some money and collaborate
