Georgia Tech student launches fundraiser to aid campus cops

A Georgia Tech student has launched an online fundraising effort to aid campus police officers affected by Monday night’s riots. What began as a peaceful vigil in memory of fellow student Scout Schultz devolved into mayhem and a police cruiser was set ablaze.

“Two GTPD officers were injured in the ensuing melees and two GTPD cruisers were torched,” wrote Phillip Yamin, an electrical engineering major in the class of 2019, who started the online effort. It’s so far raised about $2,000.

A group of Tech students plans to clean up the campus this morning.

“The majority of Georgia Tech students do not support these violent protests,” student Nuala Hutton said in an email to the AJC. “Scout’s friends and the vigil attendees were advocating for changes to mental health policy on campus when the protesters showed up and started calling for violence. The vigil was entirely separate from the protests, and it was intended to memorialize and honor Scout. This is not our community. We are still grieving.”

GT is a solid, pressure cooker school that produces some of this country’s best and brightest. Adding the soup of lxygbztq issues to a stout engineering cirriculum, brought by that individual, was counterproductive in the extreme.

Bused in protesters suck!

Good on this ‘helluva batch of engineers...’

Georgia Tech is a very good school in a very bad area. The campus police can use all the help they can get. My son graduated from that school and from the time we moved to Georgia in the late 1990's up until now it regularly makes the list of Most dangerous colleges in America

Public housing immediately south of campus. Iffy area to the west. I lived off of Virginia and Monroe and would walk back and forth to campus quite often with no problems. Take the tunnel or the fifth street bridge. Of course this was thirty-five years ago.

Gay activism at Tech goes back a long way. There was a gay student alliance in the late seventies when I was there.

The poor devil was a schizophrenic. In our PC world we like to refer them as some inane pronoun like they or it. the person was born with a pecker making him a male. The parents were as much to blame as any one else. They knew he was sick or at least they should have realized he wasn’t right

Here's a clickable link to the GoFundMe page for the GTPF officers:

Please go and make a donation, even if it's only a buck or two. What matters is showing how widespread the solidarity is for these officers -- and these constructive and good-hearted students who support them.,

It’s the Marksmanship Club president that has established the go fund me page. https://www.gofundme.com/gtpd-officer-recovery

I'll bet I went to the only college in the U.S. where the student newspaper had a weekly "Police Blotter" report.

Seriously. LOL.

No need to bus them in. Georgia Tech is right in the middle of downtown Atlanta.

Do not doubt it. Do doubt activism then was at the level of burning cars and causing damage (no hard data here, just a sense of the times and school in the south). Have no real interest in pursuing info an what sounds more like a volitional issue than a ‘civil rights’ issue.

Still believe we are responsible for the decisions we make, as in ‘play silly games, win silly prizes.’

There were some comments on reddit last night purporting to be Tech students saying the rabble rousers were community college types and Emeroids.

The Techwood Projects to the south got nuked for the ‘96 Olympic Games. Cross the tracks and Northside Drive/Marietta Street and there’s all sorts of sketchy to be found to the west.

Pretty obvious the rioters are being bused in and are being paid.

I find it hard to muster any concern, all around (aside from the hapless public), considering *FEW* have ever been found/filmed and, at least to MY knowledge, NEVER tracked down before/during/after and they’re off again into the night.

IMO, means (pols are) using the cops (knowingly) and cops (knowingly) aren’t too worried about a few of their own going down to 1) pipe-up 2) push-back 3) boot every vehicle and arrest the lot. IOW their masters’ dogs.

Karl Spooner and I discussed this on another thread. The protesters were mostly antifa.

Agreed. Approach police armed with a knife repeatedly shouting 'Shoot me' .... Suicide by cop. This guy - ? - should have been under round-the-clock psychiatric care.
