Why did one of the U.S. Navy’s most advanced subs return to port with a pirate flag?

That’s the one, the Fwankfuwter.

If there was a USS Barney Frank as well as the USS Harvey Milk, which one would rear end the other?
Never mind, I don’t really want to know!

How about that? My BT platoon lost our AWOL Free streamer when some sorry SOB decided to run to a church in Columbus to seek asylum. I don’t think he would survived if he had come back. We did take top marksmanship and PT streamers so not all bad.

My old first shirt used to say that our unit (29th Light Infantry) had more battle streamers than the Marine Corps (he was technically right, but most of those came from Civil War).

Okay.
All I knew was a naval ship had been named for Milk. I considered that an insult.

oh but he did... he blabbed about the F117 while trying to get reelected and the AF had one hell of a time trying to put the cat back into the bag

Funny scene, think it was after winning their first engagement in Bruce Dern’s heavily biased exercises. The XO (Rob Schneider?) was blindfolded and walked off a plank....into a fisherman’s net and thus off the boat. Crew decked out in pirate gear, flying a jolly roger.

Cook: What's that?
Crewman: Uh....My parrot.
Cook: Don't lose that. It's tonight's supper.

So many good scenes in that movie.

"Be..All that you can be!"
"That's the Army, Jackson."

I’ve got a picture someplace of one of them pulling into port with a naked stripper on the dive plane.

Those were the good ol' days.

Back in the 70s our NCO Club had strippers every month on membership night. By 1980 some prig had it stopped.

>> I don’t mind it. I can’t stand they named it after Carter, but...the sailors don’t get to choose where they serve.

Yes.

I think our best response is to make sure the sub is a poke in the eye to Carter. Everything he tried to prevent our Navy from being.

I was in the USN during his administration, and I sure did hate seeing his portrait hung in buildings.

There appears to be a push broom, or perhaps a squeegee of some type, visible about the US flag, with the handle extending down below, to the right of the railing.

“Use of the term Jolly Roger in reference to pirate flags goes back to at least Charles Johnson’s A General History of the Pyrates, published in Britain in 1724.[1]”

When they greased the ladder and Rob Schneider slid down banging his head and knocking himself out.

I loved every scene with the radio operator.

Considering the things that it is capable of doing, if you were an anti-American despot, would you want to admit that it was the Jimmy Carter which foiled your scheme? If you were Jimmy Carter, would you want your name associated with Tom Clancy type actions?

I looked carefully and didn’t see it. What would be the point of having a broom or squeegee out there if it’s so hard to see? If you’re going to display a broom, wouldn’t you place it in such a way as to allow it to be easily seen?

Here’s a pic of a sub displaying a broom. Notice how prominent it is. No need to play Where’s Waldo; you can’t miss it.

There is certainly nothing like the broom you just linked in the photo in question. However, there does seem to be something approaching the look of a push broom or squeegee as I posted earlier. I’m not saying it is there, because I might be misinterpreting what I’m seeing, but it’s easy for me to spot.

No Broom on this Boomer, just the Jolly Roger.

The lack of a broom and flying the Jolly Roger is what every one is talking about.

There are a lot of former Navy guys on Free Republic, and none of us know what the Jolly Roger means.
