A new UN report on the state of broadband says 1.5 billion more people use the internet today than in 2010, but 52% of the world's population still lacks access. Of people without internet, 62% live in Asia and the Pacific Islands, and 18% in Africa.
"Men outnumber women in terms of Internet usage in all regions of the world." China has the biggest internet market, with 700 million users. The global average internet speed is 7.2 megabits per second. South Korea has the fastest internet at 28.6 Mbps. To compare, Nigeria has one of the slowest speeds with 1.5 Mbps.
Why it matters: The global "digital divide" risks becoming a "digital chasm" as the poorest nations continue to be disconnected from the rest of the world, the report says.

Agreed...
Are they the same folks without flush toilets?
So what. They also don’t have clean water. The author needs to be introduced to Maslow and Herzberg.
Huh
The NK people, for example, are just too stingy. It’s not that they’re being crushed and tortured by a vicious regime :)
The “stodgy conservative who’s out of touch” has always hurt the conservative cause.
#### the UN and #### giving money to them. They just want to redistribute wealth.
But your statement is way out there :)
Want to bet that 52% of the world would not understand the concept of “internet”?
The U.N. wants the third world to have internet access.
That requires networks and computers.
Who is going to pay for that? Do you think the third world will?
As I said, 48% of the planet’s people do not want to pay for the 52% without internet access, to have it.
You’ve made two posts to me now, failing to grasp this point.
It’s pretty straight forward.
AT&T is the only provider here and they say all the BW is used up and they will not add more (we are rural acreage lots). I bet they change their tune when Century Link rolls in here!
That’s what I was thinking.
“Does that 52% have easy access to drinkable water?”
If not, lack of internet access is way-down on their list of problems.
LOL! Most likely.
52% is the number of people in the world that live in a home using building materials of cardboard, grass or ice.
Probably the same 52% without indoor plumbing
I wasn’t judging you, I promise :)
I’m betting a much larger percentage don’t have Mercedes either. Does that mean we’re obligated to supply them?
Lucky them.
That's still a lot faster than my AOL dial-up.
My recent upgrade from the VIC-20 to a C-64 allowed me to finally get on line.
,,,,, and I don’t have a Rolls Royce would any one like to GO FUND ME ??
I am on Century Link so technically i don’t have internet access either.
Oh my. Too bad so sad.
About the same percentage of the world are still using the street or the dirt for a bathroom aren’t they?
Somebody should do something.
Nah.
