Following the announcement of a "not guilty" verdict in the case of Jason Stockley, a white former St. Louis police officer who killed a young black man, protesters took to the streets.
Prosecutors accused Stockley of murdering Anthony Lamar Smith after the police interrupted a drug deal. Smith took off in his car and eventually crashed. Stockley claims he saw Smith with a gun and fired.
But prosecutors said that Smith didn't have a gun and Stockley planted a weapon.
Dashcam video from Stockley’s police car captured him saying he was “going to kill this (expletive), don’t you know it.” Less than a minute later, he shot Smith five times.
Stockley’s lawyer dismissed the comment as “human emotions” uttered during a dangerous pursuit.
In his decision, Wilson wrote that the statement “can be ambiguous depending on the context.”
“This court, in conscience, cannot say that the State has proven every element of murder beyond a reasonable doubt or that the State has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in self-defense,” the judge wrote.
In an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after the verdict, Stockley, 36, said he understands how video of the shooting looks bad, but that he did nothing wrong.
“I can feel for and I understand what the family is going through, and I know everyone wants someone to blame, but I’m just not the guy,” said Stockley, who left St. Louis’ police force in 2013 and moved to Houston.
St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner acknowledged the difficulty of winning police shooting cases but said prosecutors believe they proved that Stockley intended to kill Smith.
Friday’s protests began with largely unsuccessful efforts at civil disobedience.

The prosecutor overreached. Charging the cop with first degree murder and armed criminal action didn’t give the judge the chance to convict him on lesser charges if he had felt they were warranted. It was murder one or nothing, and the judge decided that the evidence didn’t support that.

Many guns go through many hands from the time of purchase, and many of don't get reregistered. I haven't read anything that suggests that the gun was stolen. The DA had six years to try to trace the gun from its initial purchase, and try to determine how it eventually ended up in the possession of Officer Shockley. It seems to me that it was impossible to do so.

Pretty good run-down of this on Larry Elder (I think it was) yesterday. The perp rammed into the cop car before he gave them a merry chase. Perp nearly killed any number of innocent citizens as he drove crazily for miles. Cops thought he had a gun in the car. LE sounded very convinced that the verdict was correct.
U2 has been outed as the racists they obviously are. Peaceful demonstrations by downtrodden salt of the earth type people and U2 cancels because they fear violence.

That’s right, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t the dead dope dealers gun. A lack of evidence is not evidence. Stockley did what every other officer who has just found a gun under that was unsecured. He made it safe ergo he touched it.
Further, they couldn’t prove it wasn’t the other Sierra Hotel that was initially in the car with dopeman.
Lastly, there was heroin in the car. Stockley seized it, badguy DNA on it, Stockley’s not.
