Former spy and and legendary thriller writer John Le Carré has compared the election of Donald Trump and Brexit to the rise of fascism in the 1930s in Spain, Germany, Italy and Japan.
The 85-year-old writer released his 24th novel, marking the return of his Machiavellian spy chief George Smiley after a 27-year hiatus.
To mark the release on Thursday of the book, 'A Legacy of Spies', which traces its origins back to his very first novel 'The Spy Who Came in From the Cold', Le Carré addressed an audience at the Royal Festival Hall in an event to support Médecins Sans Frontières.
According to The Guardian, Le Carré told his audience: 'Something truly, seriously bad is happening and from my point of view we have to be awake to that.
'These stages that Trump is going through in the United States and the stirring of racial hatred … a kind of burning of the books as he attacks, as he declares real news as fake news, the law becomes fake news, everything becomes fake news.
'I think of all things that were happening across Europe in the 1930s, in Spain, in Japan, obviously in Germany. To me, these are absolutely comparable signs of the rise of fascism and it’s contagious, it’s infectious. Fascism is up and running in Poland and Hungary. There’s an encouragement about.'

He’ll turn 86 next month (October). I am disappointed in him after reading all his books. I thought I got to know a sober clear thinking person who had it all figured out. He is way over playing what he hears about Trump. The smears must be working. Certainly nothing Trump actually does deserves this level of opprobrium.

She did lose, substantially by the rules of our elections. There was fraud, although whether or not she would have won the popular vote without it remains unclear. What is becoming clearer is that voter fraud may have given her New Hampshire’s electoral votes, and that she likely had even less electoral votes.
That said, you are absolutely correct that the battle is ongoing, and that we could have had an absolute disaster. The left has infiltrated American society - clearly. Ironically, although the international left is secular, they have, in my opinion, used our consciences as a religious nation against us. We want to be fair, and they use this to convince us to do things that are dangerous to our survival as a nation.
That is why the Dems on the FCC are still so opposed to the free existence of Fox News (lately faux NewZ).

No, you and many others here miss my point. It is a very near thing.
We won, but not by a great enough margin to be comfortable. The left wing enemy is very large in numbers and what’s more, completely occupies our cities and seats of power.
History repeats, but never identically. I think he’s almost there, but missing a critical element, as you pointed out. I think that the election of trump is having the impact he mentions - in a way. What it is doing is exposing the fascists on the left. It is they who are doing all those brown shirt antics.
And this thing almost certainly will not end well. Neither side is going to give up, and it is only ramping up. It’s been going on for decades, but as with so many things, it is growing in intensity almost exponentially. We really saw it in the Obama years, but the right are much more peaceful losers than the left.
I think that when the SCOTUS upholds his travel ban(s) there will be a lot more acting out on the left.
