Bernie Sanders' government plan to provide "Medicare for All" is getting increasing support from prominent Democrats and appears headed to become an important part of the party platform in the future.
The idea to put the entire health care industry under government control for all 320 million Americans is not popular. A Pew survey from last June shows only 33% support the idea of single payer. More importantly, a large percentage of Americans strongly oppose the idea. In short, using Sanders' plan as a catalyst for a takeover by Democrats of the House and Senate would cost more votes than it attracts. This spells doom in swing districts where Democrats must attract a sizable number of Republican votes to be successful.
But that hasn't stopped an ever growing number of liberals from announcing support for Sanders' plan.
Sanders on Wednesday will roll out a Medicare-for-all bill, which aims to extend the Medicare program, federally funded insurance for people over the age of 65, to all Americans.
A single-payer healthcare push has previously been well outside the mainstream for most Democrats. But Sanders' legislation has picked up support from high-profile Democrats.
Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey on Monday became the latest to offer support for Sanders' legislation.
"I'm signing onto Medicare-for-all, which I'm excited to do this week," Booker said in an interview with NJTV. "Sen. Sanders, myself, and some others are going to be announcing some legislation this week along with some of my other colleagues."
Booker, who has been floated as a possible contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, said Obamacare was just a "first step" in securing healthcare for all Americans.

“Shows how deep the brainwashing goes from the public schools and media, doesnt it?
How little they know. How little they understand how this would work.”
Blaming public schools is ludicrous.
I don’t know any private schools that teach kids how Medicare works.
.
.
Let it be known that another real brainiac sitting in the Senate---NY's own Kirstin Gillibrand, imbecile extraordinaire, has plans on co-sponsoring Sanders's bill, according to the New York Daily News. It is expected to go to the floor on Wednesday.
The problem isn’t Medicare for all, the problem is Medicare.
Government run “healthcare” (which it is not) is the problem. Most people morph insurance and care. It is a moot point because nothing government does can be undone until it finally implodes.
Not all of have the means to afford private school.
“Not all of have the means to afford private school.”

And not all that HAVE the means want private school.
There are some superb public schools.

Part A? B? D? G?
Medicare is an incredibly complex alphabet soup.
Read it and weep...

^5 is the trigger date for those who fulfill the working/retirement requirements - I’m starting in Nov.
Medicare pays doctors 50% on the dollar. The medical system would collapse under 100% Medicare.
But saying “medicare for everyone” isn’t
Oh hell, just get on with it. Or maybe NK can nuke us and destroy some democrat strongholds....
Democrats need to tell Mexicans and Hispanics to vote 5 times each for dems and they will wipe out the black population,so Hispanics can be at the front of the free goodies line, then tell whites as soon as they put dems back in power, they will kill off all the blacks to make America safe again and their taxes go away down.... Since dems are helping get rid of blacks through the abortion movement, why not say it out loud...VOTE DEMOCRATS AND WE MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN... Just by murdering people nobody likes...Even blacks democrats want blacks dead and gone..Thats what the dems want to say but won’t be that honest.....
This is worse than UBI, which would replace welfare.
Single payer would add another open-ended entitlement at a time when we’re unable to fully fund existing social welfare programs.
Where would we find the money to fund an American version of Canada’s Medicare?
And if you love the mess made with Obamacare, wait til to see what’s on offer with Medicare.
In short, this is going to bankrupt the country and if it doesn’t - it can cover everything only by denying most Americans everything but health care politicians decide they can have.
This is beyond stupid.
If they have any sense at all (and I mean are cunning not necessarily sensible), which I think they do, the Dems will push it the following way: we want to get rid of deductibles and premiums entirely! No more will middle class America be forced to pay any burdensome cost each month for their healthcare! The rich (whoever they deem “rich”) will pay their fair share!
What this will mean though, and what they will never say, is that everyone will see a significant increase in their taxes. Most won’t “notice” it because it will be part of the taxes taken out of their check every week. And no one looks at that anyway, looks at how much they *could* be earning if the government strongman (the IRS) didn’t take so much.
So another $100 or so lost every month won’t mean much to those paying $1,000s every month in health costs. And that’s how it’ll be sold too, a trade off where you get more for the money you are paying in taxes. All on the “rich”’s dime of course.
The problems no one will see except those who already know how government operates (that is, for example “conservatives” or everyone here on FR) everyone else though won’t see or believe that it will invite massive waste, and abuse, and everyone’s cost for healthcare will actually increase (unless you don’t mind waiting a year for a CT scan or some other routine diagnostic procedure that now one can usually get within a couple weeks).
You will pay extra, to be put at the “front of the line” so to speak for such tests and procedures, like it is in Italy now, or you will die waiting. There there is national healthcare no one “pays” (because they all pay massive taxes) but you wait for routine tests sometimes as much as a year, even if such tests, procedures and even specialists could bring significant relief to chronic illnesses you are currently suffering with. You wait, a long time. Unless you pay then you can get seen literally tomorrow. It’s literally like that in Italy now I know my wife is Italian and fortunately her parents have enough money to pay to be seen or treated immediately by the same medical staff and machines others will be treated with a year later.
They pay, typically like 100 euros, and they are seen the next day. But if they didn’t pay, they would be seen a year from now. By the same people with the same equipment. This is the reality of “single payer” that the leftists don’t get, or they do understand but don’t care. It actually benefits the “rich” more than anyone. Because the “rich” can be seen by medical professionals and treated whenever they want. As long as one is willing to pay enough money. But the poor, the “disadvantaged” you know the ones the left are *supposed* to be for, they wait. And wait. And wait. And sometimes die waiting.
But who cares. It’s “fair” now in Italy. And it will be here too, under the Democrat plan.
Yup the tax burden alone will crush the economy not to mention all the red tape.
In contrast, a universal basic program gives every one a basic sum of money as income to save, spend or invest and it flows right back into the economy without new taxes or mountains of red tape.
Democrats are looking back to the past not to the future. If given a choice between bureaucrats running our health care or people being allowed to decide to what to do with new guaranteed income, the choice is clear.
To all except the Democrats. I love the direction in which they’re heading. I want them to tell the American people just how much “free” health care actually costs.
I don’t have sympathy for a GOP in hock to corporate donors which can’t bring itself to repeal Obamacare and replace welfare but we really need to stop digging by creating a new entitlement program that will be impossible to get rid of.
All the reasons why we should hate it.
We’re going to take Americans’ freedom to choose their doctor away from them because some people get better health care than others.
Common sense health care reform should improve it for others not take it away from those who already have it, right?
That’s making it worse - not better.
Yes, I know. My son and daughter both attended superb public schools. NO complaints from me - but then they had me to counter the leftist agenda whenever it came up.
You’re absolutely right. Everything you have said is true. It’s frightening how brainwashed people are, especially young people. They are setting themselves up—and many other people up—for some serious tragedy—and apparently they’re too stupid to understand it.
I always assumed that this would be farmed out to companies that already have Medicare HMO programs, which are all the big carriers.
I think the dirty little secret is that health insurers could potentially love this. They became plan administrators for the government at a fixed price, and then pay at CMS rates.
