Fort Pierce has gotten more than 15 inches, the most of any location in Florida, even though they have been far from the center of the storm.
Thanks for the new thread! Winds are picking up pretty good here in Lakeland. Looks like we might be in the eye of the storm, now. Still have power! (Knock wood)
I saw this on a horse racing website. The track is located in the Broward/Dade county border.

Gulfstream Park officials said damage to the grounds from Hurricane Irma was minimal to none after the worst of the storm had passed through the area by late Sunday afternoon.
Except for some palm fronds litering the area, the barn area and racetrack appeared to suffer no effects from the monster storm, the eye of which passed well to the west of Gulfstream Park.
Officials said no decision on when racing might resume at Gulfstream Park would be made until Monday at the earliest Entries have been drawn for Wednesday’s and Thursday’s programs but there are many factors involved not the least of which is when the majority of horses who were evacuated from the track would be able to return to the grounds. Officials said all but approximately 250-300 horses were evacuated, many to the track’s satellite training center, Palm Meadows, located 40 miles to the north in Boynton Beach. A large number were also moved to Ocala which unfortunately is now expected to be in the general path of Irma later this evening and into Monday morning.
It seems to me that the thing has turned to the north east and may come back to go up the Atlantic coast. Two of the current models are showing that, too. Of course it is downgraded now, but I’m not sure it is going to the Mississippi.
Checking in. Hunkered down (family so tired of this cliche) 5 miles west of downtown Orlando. Power out for 2.5 hours now. But I even had cable / dish until then! It normally goes out during a light rain.
Anywho, drinks are still cold, freeping away.
The fastest sustained winds I saw for H. Irma were 88 m.p.h. in Naples. It looks like NHC really overestimated Irma’s strength as it approached Florida. That’s not to say that 88 m.p.h. winds aren’t dangerous or can’t cause widespread damage. Many homes in Naples will undoubtedly need new roofs after the storm, and the electricity outages are very real. It’s just another example of the NHC inflating wind speeds (claiming sustained winds up to 130 m.p.h.) to generate fear and alarm. The public is best served by accurate information, not alarmist information.
Still here. Palm Bay report. Street flooding subsiding, crown of road now visible. Still have power with occasional bumps. Wind has started shifting from easterly to southerly as storm is coming parallel. Lots of snapped branches but still in the trees. Some fencing down, taking care of what Matthew didn’t destroy. Mostly wind now. Not sure what to make of the bottom half of the storm gone from radar. I assume that means no rain but wind will still be with us. Not out of the woods yet. Ciao
I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve had the cable news on today, Fox and CNN, and their emotional over the top reporting, like this is so world ending event is pathetic. I guess the only positive point to it is that they are not talking about Russia, nor back to back criticism of Trump. The fear mongering though is really incredible. No wonder so many people are afraid of their own shadow, afraid of raindrops, sleep breeze, or in the D.C. Area, a snowflake.
prayers for you. Be safe.
Checking in from Sebring. We got the eyewall at an oblique angle. 100+ mph winds for about an hour. Ficus trees are shredded. No roof leaks. House is solid. Lost power just after 7pm. No water pressure. AT&T cell service sucks. It’s sketchy on a good day. Wife’s Version running hot and fast. Hope everyone is safe. Later.
Catching hell in Polk County!
Any idea what’s going to happen in Bama? We plan to grab supplies first thing in the morn. Schools are closed.
Is is my imagination or are hurricain warnings more accurate now that Trump runs NOAA?
Angels around you guys!
... Hi this is Nightmare in Glynn County GA, and I can say that it is truly a nightmare here. This is nothing like any storm/wind I’ve ever lived thru before. It’s going to take some time to fix this mess.
Thanks for the FOUR threads that you ran for this storm. I was a spectator for this (I am living in Germany) but have coworkers, friends, and distant relatives in the Southeast.
Thank you and well done. I hope you and yours made it through with minimum damage.
I am pretty sure that my brother in Jacksonville got flooded. He lives right on the St Johns River and 2 days of a noreaster had pushed water into the river and the water was almost up to his swimming pool before the hurricane.
Aiken County, SC here. Just checking in.
Lots of wind and rain.
Reminds me of Matthew.
Momentary power failures: One last night (UPS on computer beeping woke me up), three since 8:00AM today.
Numerous power sags.
No damage out here in the country as far as I know.
Praying for the best for everybody. Stay safe!
High winds and rain in Atlanta. Some flickering of lights.
I thought the GA Governor over-reacted by closing the state down, but now I agree with him. No one should be out in this storm.
My fireman son is working today in a town next to Atlanta. Since there are few fires, his main job is to care for the elderly and remove fallen trees. He’ll have a very busy day today.
How are the orange groves?
