Australia same-sex marriage vote: PM comes out for Yes
BBC News ^ | 10th September 2017 | BBC News

Australian political leaders, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, have come out in support of a campaign for same-sex marriage. More than 20,000 people gathered in Sydney to campaign ahead of a non-binding postal vote on changing Australia's marriage act. Mr Turnbull made a surprise appearance and speech at the launch of the New South Wales Yes campaign. Opposition leader Bill Shorten then addressed the crowd at the main rally. The non-binding vote to gauge support for changing Australia's Marriage Act will be sent out from 12 September, with a result expected in November.

The survey will not have the power to legalise same-sex marriage but it could lead to a vote in parliament if the majority of Australians support the change. The postal plebiscite has been criticised by opponents as an unnecessary delay in resolving the debate, which they say could be settled immediately in parliament.

The Prime Minister previously said he would personally be voting in favour of same-sex marriage, but has not publicly campaigned prior to the surprise speech on Sunday. "Throughout my public life I've sought to ensure same-sex couples are not discriminated against and their entitlements, be it in respect of medical benefits, taxation, superannuation or employment, are no different to those afforded to heterosexual couples. Why then shouldn't those same rights now be extended to marriage?" Mr Turnbull pointed out that 23 other countries had already legalised same-sex marriage.

"In any one of those nations, has the sky fallen in? Has life as we know it come to a halt? Has traditional marriage as we know it been undermined? The answer is no," he said. Meanwhile, Mr Shorten, who is the leader of the Australian Labor Party, told campaigners he anticipated the yes vote to win in the postal survey.

What changed was that the courts took over deciding who gets a religious rite and that people practicing that religion have to change it at the courts’ order or be politically and socially persecuted

That’s kind of a BFD

I’m for live and let live, I’m ex-religious activist turned libertarian.

But the most important liberties are right there in the Constitution.

Gay marriage supporters attack the First Amendment relentlessly by destroying people who oppose them, trying to silence religious people.

They assault freedom of speech and religion and I have to defend people I might not agree with 100 percent.

The State has not been satisfied to simply make up its own secular civil institution of “ marriage” ie civil unions, with all the same legal treatment as church marriage
Nope
The churches must bow to Caesar or be punished
Thats a BFD

"And when did it become cool to be gay?"

Yeah, I don't get it either. I don't get how many people are for homosexuality. For me, just the thought of a woman kissing a woman or a man kissing a man totally GROSSES me out! I'm not "afraid" of homos, I am just disgusted by them.

Yep, I’m not afraid either. I’m not wanting to see their expressions of affection and all that. But not afraid as such.

I don’t get this talk of “homophobia”. A phobia is a fear of something. I don’t fear homosexuals. I just oppose the homosexual social/political agenda.

Not just a fear:

Phobia: an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something

I think the word should be: homorevulsion. :-)

See what happens to any prominent public figure in this day and age, who would stand for traditional marriage. It doesn’t happen.

As it happens, quite a few members of the conservative coalition parties (Liberal and National Parties) in Australia are doing just that. So a few members of the socialist Labor party. They are being attacked in some quarters but it's reasonably restrained at present - and the people who are attacking them don't like them anyway.

You are insulting Mitt Romney and John McCain, who may weakly conservative but are not actually corrupt.

Turnbull is a Hillary

I take your point.

Tony Abbott was a better leader than Turnbull but the backdoor intrigues of Australian politics have been legion in recent years.

If the poll numbers go down the back room kicks the leader out.

This is the 22nd attempt since 2004 to get legislation through the Australian Parliament to enact same sex marriage. The last 21 attempts have failed.

This time, there’s a good chance it will succeed. If it doesn’t, they simply will not take no for an answer. And that’s part of the problem. This is the debate that never ends. It’s never allowed to until they get what they want.

This also may be the last time that there will be any protection for churches included - that will allow Ministers to refuse to be involved.

You’ve got to know this is going to be the most corrupt ballot measure in modern history. The Gaystapo has no scruples whatsoever.

And I thought Australia was a safe & sane place.

It's a leftist nanny-state. Sort of like California or New York ... except that you can't get away from it as easily.

Those are exactly the kinds of places that the demonic left love to attack.

This is the debate that never ends. It’s never allowed to until they get what they want.

They have been reading Alinsky. The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution. They don't give a rat's behind about sodomite "marriage" per se. They're trying to overturn civilization.
