A Trump adviser says that after a tumultuous seven months in office, it had finally dawned on the president: "People really f@&@ing hate me." For someone who has spent his life lapping up adulation, however fake, it was a harsh realization. This is a man with an especially acute need for affirmation.
This week's bear hug of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer opened Trump's eyes to one solution: Stop doing things that people hate, and start striking deals.
Who knows if this will stick. But there's reason to think it might, according to Trump's friends and aides. Here's why, based on conversations Jonathan Swan and I had in the aftermath of the surprising deal:
He can blame Republicans for his troubles. Trump has convinced himself he was duped by GOP leaders into repealing health care and blowing his first seven months on a fool's errand. If he can strike a few deals, he can reshape history to make the party not himself the culprit.
He can please the kids and New Yorkers. With the banishment of Bannon and his allies, Trump is left with a largely moderate to Democratic staff.
A senior administration official said of Trump's deal with Chuck and Nancy: "He just wanted to do something popular." He's reveling in the coverage, including lavish praise from "Morning Joe."
He can spend money, not take it away. Trump hates complex topics and gravitates to things you can build, such as planes or new infrastructure projects.
Remember he told Republican senators the House healthcare bill was "one mean sonofabitch." He said he wanted the Senate version to be much more generous, with no worry about cost.

Breitbart is nothing if not gullible, since Andrew died.
Confirmation bias for NeverTrumpers and those who think they are in a position to judge and predict the outcome of Trumps every move.
‘Total Fake news. Mike Allen is a leftwing liar.’
True. Mike Allen’s goal is to stir the pot and cause dissension and unease on the right. He needs to be ignored completely.
What an insulting article. Mike Allen knows squat.
If he does too much hugging of Nan, Chuck and their agenda he may end up with the people that elected him hating him and the people that hated him still hating him.
I wouldn’t argue with that. I don’t follow the site very closely, and never have. Not trying to make a statement with that. I just read most stuff here and don’t always look at sources. Comments and the gist of the commentary is what jumps out at me.
Here they seemed to tone it down a bit, and I thought that was a nice variation.
Bannon apparently was right in saying that the presidency we elected is over, at least for now.
He has put DACA on a path to be legalized—and until then doesn’t mind continuing the illegality of the program as it was instituted.
Jivanka is thrilled, and the media and the polls are trying to do all they can to give him enough ego rewards to keep him on his new, Democrat path.
I don’t disagree with you that McCain has it out for Trump. However, I believe he and his pal Lindsey Graham visited the White House and had dinner with Trump.
McCain wants amnesty.
He’s been working on one since 2005 and has failed repeatedly.
That’s what he wants most of all for his legacy.
The way that Bannon and Gorka left made it clear that the conservatives are being purged and people in the White House aren’t people who necessarily agree with or what to accomplish what Trump ran on.
He is a horseface know-nothing and I just shit up his timeline ... again ...
If the world was just, that Nork rogue lands in his lap ...
I’m with you and all the other posters who agree that President Trump does not require the advice or admiration of Mika, Joe, Politico or Axios.
Ryan and McConnell need to be replaced. They have officially been outed as Anti-Trump and they just need to exit stage left. Their ability to get any legislation done was a joke. The American people are not stupid. Their efforts to sabotage Trump were intentional and we are done. Good for Trump to say 'Bye Felicia' and they didn't even see it coming.
McCain is a stealth democrat. He needs to be exposed for the Democrat he is. Someone needs to expose him for being a Dem.
The moment mccain killed the senate healthcare bill that would have gone back to the House for revision. McCain is a drama queen and intentionally killed it.
WASHINGTON As John McCain was heading into an early-morning, pivotal vote on Republican hopes to repeal Obamacare, he didnt give away how hed go.
Watch the show, he told reporters.
That they did, in one of the more exciting moments in recent memory on Capitol Hill.

But his mind wouldnt change. McCain walked over to a gaggle of Senate Democrats and told them that he would be voting no on the Obamacare repeal measure. His mind had already sped ahead to what was next: the National Defense Authorization Act, a top priority for the Armed Services Committee chairman. Lets get this over with, McCain told the cluster of Democrats, according to senators. I really want to do NDAA. Before the final vote was called, McCain walked to the Democratic side of the aisle and spoke to a happy Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and embraced Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).
What did McCain say about Trump after the vote? He was gloating.
Only Lindsey has had been to the Whitehouse for lunch. McCain hasn’t stepped foot int he WH.
Trump and McCain spoke briefly on the night that drama queen McCain walked over to the Dems before his healthcare vote, told them he was going to vote against it, Diane F hugged him and then he gave the thumbs down.
McCain is a Dem, drama queen and a troll. He hasn’t been to the WH since Trump has been in office.
This article is simply an example of another strain of Trump Derangement Syndrome. Same-same pop psychology of “Trump is nuts”. Very tiring.
Axios is FAKE NEWS.
Renamed fake news is still fake news.
Wrong.
Listen to their interviews. ;)
They are working on the outside now. More freedom to continue MAGA.
It’s all about MAGA.
They did have dinner. Graham and McCain were at the White House for dinner in April:
Obviously McCain still hates him, but they did have dinner.
This speculation might be true (scary) or it might be wrong. Time will tell.
