The US will embark on an aggressive effort to tighten North Koreas isolation on Monday with a call for an oil embargo and a partial naval blockade.
A draft United Nations resolution seen by the Observer would also block textile exports and the hiring of North Korean labour by foreign countries. The American delegation has called for the UN security council to debate the draft, in an attempt to force decisive action following last Sundays massive nuclear test of a bomb, Pyongyangs sixth.
The most striking language in the resolution authorises naval vessels of any UN member state to inspect North Korean ships suspected of carrying banned cargo and to use all necessary measures to carry out such inspections. The implications of such a resolution would be far-reaching. Any attempt to board or divert a North Korean vessel could trigger an exchange of fire.
As well as banning any exports of crude oil, condensates, refined petroleum products, and natural gas liquids to North Korea, the draft resolution calls for a prohibition on the import of textiles and an end to the hiring of North Korean nationals, on the grounds that the regime uses the foreign currency earned to support its prohibited nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
Both Russia and China employ cheap North Korean labour. In Russia they work in logging camps and construction sites, helping build a new football stadium in St Petersburg that will be used in the World Cup next year.
The US draft measure would also freeze the assets of Kim Jong-un and the top leadership in Pyongyang.

Smart move by the President. Get all those ducks in a row.
Jimmy’s smiling because he’s a fool. The others are smiling because they don’t believe their luck in finding such a prize fool to put one over on.
This will be viewed as an act of war
It will start with a trade war and blockade. It will escalate to kinetic as the noose tightens.
Correct. Trump doesn’t shiv a git about the UN.
Really? Where is the UN air force and navy?
Any North Korean nuclear ability that can reach Guam or Hokkaido can hit most major Chinese cities and a few Russian cities like Vladivostok. The idea that North Korean nuclear weapons are aimed at China and Russia as much as the United States has to be on their minds. I don't think they are happy about it.
Aren’t we still technically at war with North Korea?
They didn’t veto the last batch of restrictions.....much to everyone’s surprise.
The war never ended, only an armistice.
Didn’t Jimmah Cotta receive the 2002 Nobel Peace prize for resolving the North Korean crisis? Things are so much better now.
This will be viewed as an act of war

That is the precise reason it doesn’t have a snowflake’s chance in Yuma of getting through the UN.
A lot of this depends on how China and Russia follow through on any sanctions.

Sanctions are no more than kicking the can. We can dally around with sanctions and “red lines” for decades, and accomplish nothing.
That is, if Fat Boy allows us to live that long.
a blockade is a act of war
so first get a declaration of war from congress

With this congress that is an impossibility.
If I were in Trump’s position, I would call all of my most able advisors for a long and very serious discussion. I’d run all the best suggestions through the Mix-Master and see if a viable solution comes out, one which doesn’t involve blowing up the world. If no better solution than military comes forth, and because this has to stop now, I would not hesitate to do that though with much chagrin.
My personal suggestion would be to have a team of friendly operatives within North Korea do away with Kim as well as the six or so lackeys next in line of succession. Let the chips fall where they may and try to make the best of the resulting chaos.

For those who have seen “Operation Chromite”...
Where is Jang Hak-soo when you need him?
I’ve seen pictures of coal powered trucks in NK:

Yes, fat boy could do something crazy, reminds me of Jim Jones; sometimes you have leaders who are off their rockers like Nero.
It's called NATO.
Naval blockades are usually acts of war. Even a partial blockade should send fatboy into orbit.
Yeah... this ain’t Trump, this is Mattis/McMaster/Kelly
If the little guy fires a missile towards Guam tomorrow, people in Seoul better be ready for fireworks.
