This kind of scratched at a memory of an allegation made back in 1987 or so, concerning a juvenile female, Tawana Brawley. Al Sharpton took a keen interest in this case, which was later found to have inadequate basis for prosecution. The story was treated with little skepticism at first from the black community.
The grand jury concluded that there had in fact been no rape, that the condition of the “victim” did not show signs of abuse at the hands of others, and that much of the evidence appeared to be fabricated. The allegations of rape and molestation were dismissed, and the racial tensions flared to a point not seen in years, all in an attempt to relate this all back to some kind of “privilege” that was holding the blacks of America in a subservient position.
But it ended with Al Sharpton’s reputation for being a “people’s advocate” badly tarnished.
The tarnish endures today.
