Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System's Life Flight helicopter crashed Friday in North Carolina, killing four people, according to UPI.

Authorities told WTVD the helicopter was headed back to Durham-based Duke Medical Center from Elizabeth City-based Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. The helicopter was transporting a patient in need of critical care.

"With deep sorrow we can confirm that a Duke Life Flight helicopter crashed early this afternoon near Belvedere, N.C. We are in the process of directly confirming information related to this incident and will share more information as it becomes available," said Duke Health Officials, according to UPI.

The names of the four who died in the crash have not yet been released; however, staff at the Sentara Albemarle Medical Center informed the patient's family.

I hope the medics who ride helicopters at least get hazard pay.

It should tell you something that the nut holding the rotor to the shaft is called “the Jesus nut.”

I worked for years in the ER of a major hospital that routinely received patients from all over the country (the world, actually),including many patients by helicopter.

I often wondered what would happen to those choppers...the staff and patients...in bad weather,or with an engine failure, etc.

Now you know...

I had my first plane trip when I was 12.I was on the verge of filling my pants the whole way.Even today,500,000 air miles later,I get a bit nervous for the first few,and last few, minutes of a flight.

A few years ago we took a short helicopter ride in Orlando.,,,over Disney World, etc.Twenty minutes...about $40.God I was scared!

My daughter was a flight nurse for eight years. She was hired as a team replacement for a crew killed in a crash. Weather, mechanical, and revenue production issues have led to bad decisions and needless loss of life. My daughter enjoyed the job but I am relieved she quit to pursue an advanced degree.

Fixed wing planes are inherently safe. Only in very rare structural failures do they not glide.

Helicopters are inherently dangerous. Only complex systems keep them in the air.

I have thousands of hours in planes, learned to fly one before I could drive a car. Never been in a helicopter, and never will be.

I flew my own plane for 40 years.

Multi-engine, instrument, etc.

I would never ever ride in a flopper.

I used to fly to Newark and take a cab into NYC rather than ride a flopper.

Here is all you need to know: Why do they use helicopters?

Because they are going where no flying machine should ever try to go.

Reason enough for me.

Agree. Rotating wings are interesting and that is it.
