There needs to be some kind of retribution against these companies that cannot protect personal information. We need to get rid of the SSN as the master key to your identity. The original cards said "Not For Identification", which was the correct call.

I think many do not understand your point...especially the young. Every adult person in the US should just assume they have been compromised.
I have worked on that premise anyway given the nature of hacking..thus my credit freeze. I have mine frozen with all three agencies. Just be sure you keep the code they give you in a safe place for when you want to temporarily lift the freeze.

why should I trust a site that has ‘2017’ in it’s web address?

Do it again and look at the little box of text that gives you the date. It’s just a couple of words of text.

The IRS has some kind of verification data base that knows some things you wouldn’t think they would know and has nothing to do with your tax return or anything that has ever been on your tax return.
I don’t know if it is an ID service they use or what. Kind of scary the depth of knowledge that can easily be accessed.

A tad off topic but this past year I purchased several items from Coldwater Creek.
About a week ago I received a birthday card from them, with a coupon.
How the heck did they know my birthday?

I would hope to stay with one company and not spread my info to numerous credit monitoring companies. They all, already have your personal information.

There has got to be some in depth service that is not a credit check with social security number that has great details on you.
For example, IRS knew by mothers middle name (or maiden name) and if I remember correctly where she was born. Of course, it was likely tied to my social security number with them. It was used to identify me when talking to them about my return.

Clever girl.
I did the same a few years ago after I received several unsolicited copies of my previous years tax returns. Seems to work well so far, I lifted temporarily last summer for a cash out re-fi. Cost $10 but no other drama to it.

how do we know this is a true site?I went to Equifax.com and verified they have that website linked on their own page so I doubt it is fake. They also said:
Company to Offer Free Identity Theft Protection and Credit File Monitoring to All U.S. Consumers"
