Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Welcome to FR.
Know that many people are praying for those in situations like your family.
There’s not a lot most of us can do otherwise.
Irma means German (Germanic) War goddess, should scare anyone.
Family just let me know....
Jacksonville local weather saying they are now due to have a Category 1 hurricane over them, with winds inland of 75 mph+, and higher winds at the coast...... Rainfall still predicted to be heavy, but now wind is more of a focus.
...The track of the storm shifted 30 miles west from where it was, and the category went from a 3, just off the coast and almost over us, to a 1......
As mentioned by most of the weather people, there will still be more adjustments to the track, and intensity, of the storm as it goes over Cuba and gets closer to Miami....... Once going over land, up the state, ‘it loses a category in strength about every 6 hours’......
She adds.... We still have many, many people on our highways evacuating from the southern part of the state and some are staying in hotels here, which are filling up, or are filled to capacity.
Nonsense.
One other aside.
Sometimes the conditions are more stable giving more certainty to the forecasting.
There has been talk in the last few years of adding that to the forecasts. I don’t know that I’ve seen it incorporated.
This storm has a couple interesting components. One is that it is massive and has a lot of momentum, like a freight train. A lot of things came together just right to allow it to reach this size and become so stable and well organized.
The other is the high pressure and cold front to the west of the storm that are adding uncertainty to the situation.
If the cold front or the high weaken or deteriorate, as they are prone to do, they will give in allowing the hurricane to maintain its westerly track instead of remaining in place to steer the storm more to the east.
It appears that this is what is causing the difficulty in predicting a more certain storm path until just a day or two out from landfall.
No it’s a hurricane....God will bring good out of it but it’s wrong to ‘blame’ God or call this a “Clarion Bell” ....we live in a fallen world...stuff happens...but God is always good and will bring good out of this mess.....HE sees us through the storms....and further he said they would come....
Exactly, and I’ve seen it many a time.
OK. Thank you.
eye wall replacement cycle seems to be underway..expect a slight decrease in the winds by the 10pm update...
the winds field should be much larger though ,,winds will likely increase again later as the new larger eye contracts...
160MPH winds surface found on the NW quad..likely 165ish in the north and northeast Quad till then
Here’s hoping we’re all safe.
Is Tierra Verde in Zone A? I’ve been trying to access the map showing the zones but, for some reason, it won’t open in my system.

I would love to be wrong. I gave naughty nurse my thoughts on the storm 4 days ago. I was wrong on parts of my prediction, did not think it would land as a 5. I believed it would weaken as water temps had been lower toward Cuba and Florida. They went up a lot. Bastardi is calling for a lowering to a 4 then back to a 5 before it hits. We need to see where this actually hits. I called for a more westwardly path as it kept dropping, thought it might go in to the gulf. The winds in this storm as it goes over land could be very ugly. If it keeps getting fed from the hot Atlantic waters. No promises. We may get a ton of wind damage inland. The wedge/high over the north east wont help. I don’t say that much because the thread already has a thousand experts.
Be prepared! That boyscout motto!
To be honest, with this one, I’m praying a lot!!
Tell your long-time family friend to relax. It’s their honeymoon! This will be a honeymoon they will always remember.
The eye was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky.
Did you see any unusual birds that blew in with the storm, caught in the eye? That happens fairly frequently.
...I don’t think so but could have been...was to focused on everyone’s roofs with oak trees on them
The Russians?
Some of the models show that we here in the Knoxville area might get some of the storm. Hope it will have petered out quite a bit by then. But we’re not all that far from Atlanta, either. It should be interesting.
Do all that you can to get in contact with your loved ones and give them to Him to “Dwell in the secret place of the Most High”....it’s the safest place they can be....and for you too!
