Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

I guess you are talking about staying or leaving. I was stating what my mindset was. To me the decisions I had to make on those days. My hubby was in the hospital till yesterday. No way I can put him in a car now. I think you are over reacting. I am on the coast but I think we will be fine
IA big fear of mine is people will wait until the last minute..roads will be clogged up and people running of gas...they will be in the open on the roads
thats is going to happen once they wake up tomorrow and see the size
the recon plane just took off..going to be a very interesting night I think
Oh No! Is that the couple who were on TV, huddled in the bathroom of the hotel room and on their honeymoon? How in the world will they get out? Much Prayers!
I am concerned about my sister in Miami with my nephew. He is basically on life support at home. Mandatory Evac..I am praying she doesnt argue with it and try to stay. No one has heard from her at all on this.
St. Maarten is just outside the cone for Jose, and is under a Tropical Storm watch at this point, not a hurricane watch, and would be on the weaker, southern side of Jose if the current track holds. San Juan, PR was on the southern side of IRMA and came through OK.
A small town named Hammock. South of St Augustine and north of Dayton.
Our #Blue Shed Jeff is on South Beach.
If Irma shifts a few degrees more northerly in its track then it would approach Florida Peninsula where the coast curves back towards the West which gives it more space to make it's northward turn without hitting land. This would be above Palm Beach County.
One indication would be if by tomorrow morning Irma's eye passes directly over or (even better) north of Crooked Island in the Bahamas.
Yes and I am on the east coast, about half way up. Scary.
That doesn’t look like South Beach.
Even if you’re in a stout building safe from flooding, the sound is exhausting and can drive you batty, it just goes on and on.
They need to find shelter even if they locate someone to get them out.
We’re about 3-4 miles from St Jon’s river & we don’t live in a flood plain or an evacuation area.
While I hate all the noise a hurricane makes I’m not worried about Irma harming our neighborhood.
I also pray the damn thing hangs a right & burns itself out in the Atlantic.
Just saw a graphic from a weather station in Florida showing the path going straight up the middle of Florida. But here’s the scary thing....they still had it as a cat 4 when it was well on land...at least 50 miles above Miami. With that in mind would it be reasonable to assume that it’s going to be a cat 4 or a cat 3 going up most of the middle of Florida (providing that model holds) and if so has that ever happened before and what kind of damage are we looking at?
I have no idea if they were the ones on TV, I didn’t see it. I do know they were hiding in the hotel bathroom until the roof collapsed, then they made it to one of the other resort buildings. There were several couples sheltering there, some of whom were also on their honeymoons. It’s a popular spot.
Right now they’re working with the embassy and any charter service they can get hold of to try and find passage off the island.
Prayers for your sister and nephew!
That’s a really neat story! Thanks for sharing!
Pinellas County Barrier Island Dwellers take note.
Beginning at 1000 tomorrow (9/8) you will need your emergency pass from Sheriffs’ department or a DL with beach address to get on the island. Deputies will be guarding bridges beginning at that time.
For as long as conditions permit Pinellas Sheriff has designated 100 deputies to patrol the barrier islands.
Always those who wait til the last minute....and those who won’t see the dangers of hanging around.
Lots of lightening in the eye wall.
Okechobee is a large, warm lake and storms have fed off of that in the past if I’m not mistaken, so that could help sustain the storm. Honestly though, unless it really picks up a head of steam as far as directional movement it’s going to break down and lose internal wind speed fairly quickly while over land. It can reorganize and regain strength if it exits Florida to the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico, that has happened many times. Katrina did that to an extent, but it didn’t spend much time at all over land.
Thank God they are working with the embassy!!
Prayers up, for all! Please keep us posted.
