Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

I wonder what this new track would do to the St. Johns River?

You know, something that’s a bit of a carryover from the Harvey threads and discussion of people on roofs and such...

I’m sure it is different for each situation, but I wonder if anyone has ever graphed storm surge levels and wind velocity vs. time at various locations near shorelines as a hurricane approaches and passes. Of course, if a tornado is involved, or the storm stalls as Harvey did, such information would not be too useful, but I saw on I believe the preceding thread here, someone suggesting to climb up on the roof via ladder if it floods. In hurricane force winds or even tropical storm force winds - they have to be kidding.

If Andrew had passed about 20 miles north of where it did, the damage easily probably would have been tripled.

...

That’s true. Just hours before landfall it was predicted to go further north into Broward county, maybe right at the Broward Dade line, IIRC.

Of course if it had gone 20 miles south of where it hit, it would have hardly done any damage at all.

It demonstrateably has not. And look at how quick the airlines backed off and set supposedly fixed rates after getting called on up to nearly $7K flights. That is gouging. And Chevron and others haven’t raised wholesale prices, it is the retail gougers. And, yes, a fine line between price gouging and fair market. But the latter is “fair”. Raising the prices which lock out all but the uber rich is not fair. It is socially indefensible.

I would tell your family to pay close attention and be ready to go if there is any chance they are in real danger. There are several models now showing a trend to the west. Even the NHC is moving it a bit west. But who knows. Everything could shift east again.

Well the fact Jacksonville is right there in the concave with Georgia and S. Carolina ....and dirtboy shared about that area could well have very serious storm surges I suspect St.Johns River would indeed increase substantially. The water has to go somewhere and the Bay certainly is right there to do just that.

Too close for comfort with family members there..though high and dry you just can’t tell with this beast rolling!

For those who lose power to their water heater gets a trick we used for almost three weeks after hurricane Wilma in South Florida.

Connect all your garden hoses and find a spot in the yard that gets good sun. Lay the hose flat on the ground in concentric circles upon itself as you would nicely coil a boat line on the dock so it’s not a trip step. Run water through it with any kind of shut off at the end. Close the shutoff so the hose remains full. In about one hour of full sun it will be toasty warm.

Rivers have been known to flow backwards for a period of time due to wind and storm surge, so flooding could back up inland a ways.

Cockburn Town, the capital of T&C is in the worst possible location. The “good” news is that not many people live there.

Providenciales has about 25K. We need this thing to move more towards the west, and maybe that will spare them from the absolute worst.

I’m about a mile from the river. We didn’t flood for Matthew but supposedly we are in a “500 year flood” zone.

Keep an eye on Crooked Island. If Irma’s eye goes right over it or to the north that means it is tracking more northerly which is good for folks in South Florida. We should know by tomorrow morning.

“Dear Lord.. The Weather Channel just accidentally showed a graphic of Hurricane José’s track.. It looks like it’s headed straight for NJ!”

Joe Bastardi has Jose going out into the Alantic and then it can go anywhere including back towards Florida. Of course it can also just go on out into the Atlantic away from land.
