Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

"Oh, WINE is on the menu for tonight! 🍷🍷🍷" I'm thinking of something a little stronger. My son and his in-laws are in North Naples to the east of the evacuation zone. At the beginning of the week they thought it was going East. By Friday it was forecasted to batter the West coast. Now Naples seems to get the brunt of the storm. My DIL is a nurse and her supervisor told her to pack a bag because she wasn't leaving her job until Tuesday.

I’ve been watching this thread and the previous over thousands of posts but haven’t posted anything myself.

My brother is NE of Tampa Bay in a first floor apartment a few hundred yards from the Hillsborough River. Evac zone E. He’s staying and really not concerned, though he has filled up his tub.

I think his water stockage is mostly of the high-octane variety.

I will say that my daughters home will likely be flooded out and/or destroyed in 36 hours with about a hundred of her neighbors, all of whom have not had that event in their neighborhood for 80 years so there is that to get people somewhat excited.

Same exact water vapor increase occurred just before she first hit Cuba. She ramped back up to a 5 from a 4 and then dove down into Cuba. Cuba eventually weakened her to a 3. Now the same water vapor increase occurred. She will go cat 4 and make a jog in some direction.

I can understand staying for the ferals you couldn’t round up. But not to get any out of harm’s way?? That’s insane. At this point I don’t give a rat’s hairy hind end about the staff. I just hope the cats make it.

I guess you could say the same for people who build houses in Tornado Alley....or those who live near fault lines or volcano’s,.....Or for that matter in a large city where crime abounds daily....even getting into a car is dangerous and most of us to that everyday.

Pressure has dropped a tad to 938mb. Looks to me that Irma will be leaving the coast of Cuba later today. Then we shall see what happens.

Many thousands of people evacuated the east coast to go to the west coast, including the Gulf coast barrier islands.

I know, if you don’t live here you don’t get it. My Georgia friends are out of there minds with worry they just don’t get it. I have had 12 ofters to come back, my dad is there I have a place to go if need be, some of them are mad at me...

That’s a good question. I would guess that a good number of them only went to the middle of the state, but who really knows? My sister in Gainesville told me last night that it feels like there are more people there than usual for storms. She said traffic has been terrible for days, since Tuesday. During other hurricanes, it’s gotten busier, but she said this has been much worse than previous canes.

I am glad you love it. Really helps in a new place when the people are friendly. It can take a while to feel at home otherwise.

I live surrounded by mountains. I’m quoting something I read:

“I’m not afraid of heights, I’m afraid of widths”.

That’s me! Went to Florida once and I was scared of the flats.
