Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

My hope is that the storm takes all the water out of Fla. bay pushes it back into the everglades(ala Donna) and it comes back free of algae and other crap that has been screwing up the bay for years now.
Yikes,is that 24 or so hours before it actually hits, too? Already over the beach / platform.

Looking more and more like the turn north is beginning.
You know I think you are right its very possible that once the storm got free of the shoreline it would regenerate,however some are still commenting on possible shear.
I have given up trying to figure what this storm will do next I just do not know.

I’ve worked on several Hurrcane crews at chemical plants. The eye of Alicia went over my head. It’s not fun. (It IS plenty exciting )
But, I’ve also had family members take 48 hours to drive from Houston to Austin.... Unnecessarily. When EVERYONE tries to evacuate, the ones who really need to, can’t. I get why the civic leaders do it. But, I really think the entire process needs a “re-think”.
I would think so too. After Andrew even new mobile homes and manufactured homes had to be up to code as far as hurricane wind.
Lets be real, flooding is the biggest issue with hurricanes.
I think most states around hurricane alley have pretty decent housing and building infrastructure to withstand the wind...it’s that damn water surge that causing the problem.

Yeah. That was the NW bump when the eye wall came into contact with Cuban mainland again. That bump could develop into a real NW movement. Next hour or two should determine the trend.
We gotta watch high tide from now on, full moon. No telling how high or where the water will go,totally unpredictable.
What makes it hard to predict is that the reef breaks up some of the surge but not all. So no one really knows what it will be.

I look at that and wonder where their frontal dunes are, I guess things are different down there but the coastal areas I know best are hurricane-prone too, and building right on the beach like that would be asking for it. Foundation not very elevated, either.
