Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Thanks very much SEMom.
WHat worries me is the possibility of a keys hit than a jog back into the gulf and another landing, could be bad for the rest of the state,if that storm gets reenergized by warm gulf waters.

Any estimates for how strong the storm will be for north central Florida?

Yeah - still probably close to Cat 2 (+/-) strength winds, depending on how far north we're talking (guessing that the Cat 2 intensity line might be around Ocala).

A tiny bit off topic but... Today, Cavuto interviewed Jeb! about the conditions in FL and how everyone is dealing with it. Neil asked Jeb! if he’s happy with the way everything is going. Jeb! said he’s very happy and credits CONGRESS for all they’ve done. Not a word about PDJT. Jerk.

I understand it takes 24 hours to shut a Nuclear plant down...so this sounds about right I’d imagine.

But the rates do reflect the large risk.
Stationed there many, many years ago. It was like living in the Wild West. Fire Chief busted for coke smuggling. Think there were 2 or 3 cops in all (plus MPs from the NAS).
Can’t imagine what it’s like now.

Not “every single update” has moved the north turn west.

Plus a lot of places along the Gulf aren't that densely populated. We were looking at the prospect of an entire state of one of the most populous states in the Union getting Hurricane force winds. I shudder to think what the economic impact that would have.

Exactly. I don't wish this storm on anyone, but hurricane force winds for two days from the Keys to JAX? That would destroy the entire state of Florida.

I think landing in a less populated place on the Gulf would be preferable, especially if Irma gets torn up over Cuba first.

Why is Caputo talking to him? Yeb’s thoughts on anything are as relevant as Gary Hart’s thoughts!

‘Big air & boat lift’ to get about several thousand people off of Barbuuda island ahead of Hurricane Jose. .... goal is to get all off island. ....It was pretty much destroyed entirely with Irma.

Thank you. This hurricane is now projected to go over the Southern/SW tip of FL and into the Gulf, where it could do major damage to Southern MS and AL. The models showing it going up the gut of FL are becoming invalid. NOLA could be affected...

Looks pretty run down to begin with so any impact will be destructive.

They shut the power down on purpose:

https://twitter.com/WPLGLocal10/status/906282128995844096

OTOH, Wednesday afternoon the UPS for my computer was pinging every half hour or so. It was FPL, testing their ability to reroute electricity on their network and keep the lights on.

No idea how well their plan will work, and I do expect some form of power interruption— hopefully not the six weeks after Francis and Jean— but it beats having the state power company just pulling the plug because trying is too hard and they have no incentive to actually deliver the products and services in their field of endeavor.

Lost on this fool is the fact Texas was never really in play for electoral votes during the election but Florida was. It was Florida that helped tip the scales for Trump. Dumbass liberal.

Start PINGING the Southern MS/AL and possibly LA FReepers and tell them to get prepared and maybe start making evacuation plans.
