Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Looking better for whom? Folks on the west coast of FL think it’s looking worse !
Amen.
Seems FR is really veering from the credo it HAD been standing by; that this is a God friendly forum.
Cool. Thx.
These hurricane threads are an incredible public service by NautiNurse, she doesn’t want extraneous comments on her threads, try to post what you have to say somewhere else.
That home game I was planning to attend tomorrow. Not surprised by the decision to cancel this game. Even with a moved up in time start would have stressed out the players, families, and anyone else from the USF side. Plus they would be left stranded in CT.
I don’t consider God extraneous, but thanks for asking.
Better in terms of maximum strengthening before the hit. A brush with Cuba would help, but that’s kinda like the difference between getting run down by a car doing 100 vs. one doing 80 or 80...so, true: a distinction without much of a difference.
*80 or 90
Does the latest radar have it going over Sarasota?
True. Hopefully they’ll share some of it on the flip-side when it’s safe for them to get back to port. :)

Me, either!
Also as a tropical strom weakens all that energy aloft has to go somewhere and it usually comes back down in the form of extremely heavy downpours.
Harvey's rainfall totals were due solely to it moving so slowly and stalling, but historically Tropical Storms and CAT I/II storms have usually had the higher rainfall totals.
No, but you can still expect to see winds up to Cat 2 force due to the massive size of the windfield.
Here's is Dr. Ryan Maue's graphic to give yo an idea...you won't need to be anywhere near the center:
If Irma goes right up Florida, it would decrease more slowly than a normal landfalling hurricane since some of its circulation would still be over water.
If anyone has an RV, Talledega is letting evacuees stay for free.
Good info but hope I won’t need it.
Here in Atlanta we’re only supposed to get 40+ mph winds and 2-5 inches of rain Monday evening/Tuesday morning.
When the aftermath of Hugo (the Charleston storm) rolled through Atlanta is was SOMETHING. Never seen rain like that before.
Please, I earlier asked politely that we move this conversation to another thread so that it does not bog down this one. Feel free to start one.
