The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands has ordered the territory's national guard to begin seizing guns and ammunition from citizens in preparation for Hurricane Irma's landfall.

In an executive order signed Monday, Gov. Kenneth Mapp instructed Adjutant General Deborah Howell "to take whatever actions she considers necessary to carry out the assigned mission" of maintaining and restoring public order.

"The Adjutant General is authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission," the governor said in the order.

The order went into effect Tuesday at 12:01 a.m.

Maybe the hurricane will wipe Mapp off the map.

My how things have changed. I watched a documentary on Hurricane Frederic last night that hit Mobile in Sept. of 79 and the Governor, Fob James issued a shoot to kill order to the National Guard and local police for looters. He also warned looters and “vandals” that private citizens would not abide their property being stolen and it wasn’t worth their lives to try it. In other words, he saw no problem with home owners shooting looters, and he was damn angry at the press conference.

*A side note, I lived in Mobile at the time, he didn’t stay in Montgomery and then come survey the damage. He set up a command center in Baldwin County and rode out the storm with the rest of us. And the National Guard was there before, during & after the storm.*

Now we got cops & Mayor’s telling people not to shoot someone over a TV, in other words, don’t shoot a looter stealing your property and taking advantage of you with your home ripped open.

Trying to confiscate weapons? WTH? So your stuff can be stolen AND you can be shot? I don’t think so.

Handled correctly, I think that’s exactly what they’ll do in a rushed situation like the one in question. But everyone has to make their own choice whether or not it’s worth dying to make a political statement (and in a tiny place like the USVI, you are absolutely going to die if you resist). CONUS and AK, you might have enough fellow patriots to prevail, although the first guys to resist are still getting splattered. Now don’t get me wrong—there’s definitely a time to say “F*** it.” For example, had Hitlery won and somehow successfully rescinded the Bill of Rights, I probably would not have used the strategy I advocated above. In fact I might have just gone on offense figuring all was lost anyway. But I wouldn’t be willing to die in order to make a statement against a local governor who is probably going to get smacked down hard over this decision.

That is so not right, it being a US territory. Who will step in and protect the citizens’ rights?

It's not a political statement. It's an act of pure survival.

You let the Gestapo take your guns, you're at their mercy, and that of any machete wielding thug marauders who happen upon you after the storm.

That’s why under this specific set of circumstances you create the appearance of compliance. Fighting it out on a small island against guardsmen is only going to end one way, so it’s effectively a protest suicide. You won’t have to worry about marauders after the storm because you’ll be dead shortly after firing your first shot at the guardsmen. Just my opinion.

Agreed. It’s ok to hand them your junk gun, as long as you shoot them in the back of the head when they turn to leave.

How many guardsmen can there be on a small island?

And how many of those are US Citizens who swore an oath, when they enlisted, to protect and defend the Constitution?

True. That’s a slightly different term; I was wondering if they were using it that way.

CONUS has always referred to the 48 states. That term seemed pretty close.

Yes, I knew it was the same continent. I’m used to “and Alaska and Hawaii” being included. But technically he’s correct.

What, you’re trying to say the Constitution is still in force even when the weather is bad? That’s pretty radical, isn’t it?

= = =

Agree.

Your 4473 scenario only identifies legal owners.

Illegal owners didn’t do the 4473, so now the legal owner is threatened by the gov., and then by the illegal owner.

Like that was the plan.
