U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp signed an emergency order allowing the seizure of private guns, ammunition, explosives and property the National Guard may need to respond to Hurricane Irma.

I suppose this will prevent injuries to all the looters once the storm blows over. All those locals out there stealing each others corrugated tin to rebuild with and all.......

I know it happened in N.O. during Katrina, but I don’t see that happening in FL or TX.
I had an in-law in my former marriage who lived in Christiansted on St. Croix. She came back right after Hurricane Hugo ripped the island a new one in late 1989 and had a VHS video shot by a college student visiting his parents. One of the most telling scenes on the hour plus long tape was a shot of owners of a grocery store standing on the flat roof of their property after the storm passed. Almost every commercial property on the island was looted by the indigenous descendants of slaves except for this store which was owned by Pakistanis. There were about twelve Paki males on the roof keeping watch with AK 47’s. There was a crowd of din-du’s in the parking lot but they never attempted to breach the building for the free stuff.

My neighborhood was very hard hit in Harvey flooding (Cinco Ranch, Katy, Texas).
No one asked for my guns.
We had neighborhoods setting up their own armed checkpoints, to make sure people going back were actually living there.
Harris County Sheriff office was trying to keep people out of flood waters, but next door there was a community organized boat launch, taking people back to remediate their homes.
Mandatory only means to the extent they are willing to enforce it.
In Harris County, it was more advisory.
Rules are different for territories than states.
To enter a house, you’d have to do a judge-ordered search warrant, and I doubt any judge cares to sign 10,000 such warrants. Other than headline activity....nothing will come out of this effort.
Who knew the National Guard fought off hurricanes with private citizen’s guns?
I thought this was settled after New Orleans illegally confiscated guns during Katrina.

I got suckered in by that headline too. Then, I did something that is taboo amonst us here. I actually READ the article CAREFULLY.
If you do that, you find the words “IF NECESSARY” buried deep. In other words, if they NEED your guns, they will TAKE them. And your house too, IF NEEDED.
Now, I can’t imagine the N.G, being short on weapons, but hey, stranger things have happened. Under marshal law, the gobmint will simply TAKE whatever it thinks it needs.
So, the headline is a trifle misleading.
With this much lead time, mandatory evacuations are very reasonable, if done in an orderly manner.
1) Direct all hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities, to provide rosters of those who may need evacuation assistance. Send lots of people door to door to inquire as to anyone that might need help. Set up medical hard shelters out of the disaster area with personnel and supplies for these people.
2) Organize all towing companies to position vehicles and drivers along the evacuation routes, with orders that any vehicle breakdowns be towed off the highway.
3) Direct evacuations by license plate letters (which tend to be location based), so that those most at risk leave first, and their areas are then policed by national guard.
Each subsequent location evacuates in turn.
4) Cities and counties set up phone banks to robocall everyone in the area with critical information, and button push to call for assistance.
5) Equip national guard with temporary cell phone towers that can be quickly set up in outage areas.

UNLESS you declare Martial Law, and are NOT encumbered by the US Constitution......!

Exactly! I go there once in a while, and try to dive with V.I. Divers. They’re in St. Croix near the waterfront — every time a hurricane hits, they get flooded, and then the local riffraff comes in to loot the place. Every time.
I expect that’ll be the case this time — but the British Virgin Islands are going to take the brunt of the storm even more directly.
I guess that’s just the downside of living in “paradise” (with only a hint of sarcasm intended).
