“Illegal” means “against the law.” “Alien” means “foreign.”
“Illegal alien” is an accurate descriptor of foreigners who enter the country in defiance of our laws.
But if we’re going to parse the terms precisely, “criminal aliens” is probably more accurate.
All the “hardships” boo-hoo doesn’t change the legality or the foreign-ness one whit.

We don’t call people who come to the U.S. via the legal channels “legal aliens” we call them Americans.
