Giving every adult in the United States a $1000 cash handout per month would grow the economy by $2.5 trillion by 2025, according to a new study on universal basic income.
The report was released in August by the left-leaning Roosevelt Institute. Roosevelt research director Marshall Steinbaum, Michalis Nikiforos at Bard College's Levy Institute, and Gennaro Zezza at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio in Italy co-authored the study.
[snip] These estimates are based on a universal basic income paid for by increasing the federal deficit. As part of the study, the researchers also calculated the effect to the economy of paying for the cash handouts by increasing taxes. In that case, there were would be no net benefit ...

Wow, The Roosevelt Institute has that kind of money?
I sure hope they have my correct address.
Makes you wonder if they will eliminate social security payments and implement something like this instead????? I bet the democrats make this a campaign issue.
Okay ... one time payment for everyone ... money must be spent on firearms and/or ammo. I like your plan!!!
Richard Nixon and Milton Friedman have advocated versions of it.
I think its coming - inevitable with the changes sweeping through our post-industrial economy,
Our social welfare systems are already obsolete.
Dangerous idiots. Who really do think that there will always be someone there to borrow from, and what does it matter if the burden falls on future generations. It boggles the mind of any rational human who’s ever balanced a checkbook and dug into the couch for milk money.
“Instead of increasing the deficit and giving handouts, why not just cut taxes and let people keep more of their money?”
No! Who would pay for it? The country would go broke.
The fact some people make bad choices doesn’t mean every one does.
I’m tired of people who would hold back the mass of humanity because some are irresponsible.
No one said being free ever came easy.
Now, if California can just add a tax to that.......
And here is modern example of free money in Zimbabwe:
Quit trying to cuck-up Free Republic!
That’s same argument against UBI. People can’t be trusted with money!
Then why have a free country much less than a market economy?
What keeps people rational are their core values - not government coercion.
If they have good core values, how they use the money isn’t society’s business.
Let’s see - a welfare system for everyone - gov’t money handed out - what could possibly go wrong?

We’ll just need the fingerprints and eye scans of every human on the planet. To prevent fraud, of course. I mean, there could be fake birth certificates.
Then we can have Peace. And Security.
True, and also developing a means to surely purify phlogiston of negative energies would enable free transformation of plumbum to aurum!
“The report was released in August by the left-leaning Roosevelt Institute. “
Left leaning - I’m shocked I tell you.
Free money is just the same as no money over time.
Notice that I made the same point. Yet somehow places like Kuwait have been dealing with this for a long time
I believe you are right, UBI is going to be a reality. With robots and AI replacing more and more in the workforce it is coming sooner rather than later. Imagine 50% or more of the America workforce replaced by machines and computers, what are these millions of people going to live on otherwise? The wealthy who’s wealth will depend on these machines ruining their industries will see to UBI or there would be a violent revolution that would destroy the nation.
My guess is UBI will cost less than the current welfare system that has most to that money going to govt employees who oversee and regulate social welfare programs. Smaller govt and less spent will be the rails that will establish GBI.
All of us should remember to declare said goodies lost in a ‘tragic’ boating accident within 72 hours or so. LOL
That much ‘Free Money’ would also drive a Venezuelan style inflation ruining those who have saved their earnings.
