South Korea Simulates Attack On North’s Nuke Site After Test

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Following U.S. warnings to North Korea of a “massive military response,” South Korea fired missiles into the sea to simulate an attack on the North’s main nuclear test site on Monday, a day after North Korea detonated its largest-ever nuclear test explosion.

South Korea’s Defense Ministry also said Monday that North Korea appeared to be planning a future missile launch, possibly of an ICBM, to show off its claimed ability to target the United States with nuclear weapons, though it was unclear when this might happen.

The heated words from the United States and the military maneuvers in South Korea are becoming familiar responses to North Korea’s rapid, as-yet unchecked pursuit of a viable arsenal of nuclear-tipped missiles that can strike the United States. The most recent, and perhaps most dramatic, advance came Sunday in an underground test of what leader Kim Jong Un’s government claimed was a hydrogen bomb, the North’s sixth nuclear test since 2006.

The United Nations Security Council planned to hold its second emergency meeting about North Korea in a week on Monday to discuss responses to the test.

In Seoul, Chang Kyung-soo, an official with South Korea’s Defense Ministry, told lawmakers on Monday that it was seeing preparations in the North for an ICBM test but didn’t provide details about how officials had reached that assessment. Chang also said the yield from the latest nuclear detonation appeared to be about 50 kilotons, which would mark a “significant increase” from North Korea’s past nuclear tests.

In a series of tweets, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to halt all trade with countries doing business with North Korea, a warning to China, and faulted South Korea for what he called “talk of appeasement.”

The big question is will China and Russia stand down if we preemptive strike North Korea.

Moreover, how big will our strike be on North Korea. Word is you can’t be North Korea with conventional weapons. It’s too many mountains.

North Korea, will probably launch a rocket attack on Seoul, South Korea on top of a 2 million man invasion through tunnels to Seoul (35 Miles from DMZ).

If we are going to attack North Korea, it has to be massively nuclear and it has to be complete devastation within minutes, otherwise South Korea will be gone.

Those tunnels appear to be solid chert, harder to bunker-bust through.

As opposed to meaningless “show” attack tests, IMO, South Korea’s efforts would be better spent moving the 25 million people in metro Seoul out of NoKo’s artillery tube range! For the life of me, I can’t understand why SoKo’s leaders have ignored this obvious Achilles heel. In reality, this problem is driving our policy with NoKo - the threat of hundreds of thousands of SoKo casualties from the immediate artillery barrage on Seoul if there were any real or perceived US/allies hostilities has truly hamstrung our range of options. SoKo has lived under threat of NoKo military assault for more than 60 years - can’t their military and political leaders look at a map and see this glaring vulnerability??

Agree 100%

That seems to be the only safe way to do it.

Word is South Korean troops are ready to take North Korean bases while we dominate the Air.

We will see if that happens.

That sounds good, but still begs the question of how to stop Lil Kim from - in the first few hours of any conflict - firing thousands of artillery shells into one of the most populated metro areas in the world. Many countries in the past have built new metropolitan areas for defense/strategic purposes. I don’t claim to be any kind of Korea expert, but is the SoKo leadership dumb and/or blind to this reality?? Is there even any meaningful civil defense program there?

Option12, from a Warped and Weird imagination:
Seed the airwaves that a team of from US and a few from Israel, have made contact with high ranking officers in NK. The contacts are assuring our contacts that if —IT starts. they will try to take out Fatboy.
That could stir the pot so Fatboy wouldn’t know who to trust thereby, he would start his own purge!

That and nuking Tokyo. They are still mad at Japan from World War II. Ditto China and why I think this is happening despite what China is saying.

Only rocket artillery can reach Seoul. There are small towns though closer to border that will be devastated.

I say we swat the missile down, to show off OUR claimed ability to target ballistic missiles fired from North Korea.
